I have autism spectrum disorder. Some days I wish I could get rid of it, but I wouldn't be the same person if I didn't.

Are you talking about autism in general or specifically? I have an older brother that has autism, and I am a unified partner in the Special Olympics, so I see autism often.

My younger brother has autism along with a list of other learning disabilities as well. Sometimes I wonder where he'll get in life, if he'll be able to do it without me, and it worries me. In the end, I know I love him more than he or anyone else will know. I think its a blessing to him. Who would he be without it? He wouldn't be the person he is today, he would be a stranger to himself, and as hard as it is to fit in, I think he enjoys the challange. He won't go to college, he won't graduate the top in his class, and he won't have the highest paying job, but he'll always have the chance to succeed in what he does, enjoy doing whatever he does, even if thats working as a Wal-Mart welcomer. He might go be able to live on his own till hes 30.. but he'll get there one day with a loving family behind them. How would that be considered a curse? I don't think it could be.. definitely a blessing.

Autisim exists on a massive scale from those who function and live completely normal lives and you wouldn't be able to tell had autisim to those that need constant care.

Clearly - which end of the scale a person exists on is going to dictate whether it is a 'curse' or not.

I'd never describe autisim as a blessing.

hi chris!
I think you have to make it a blessing, because there is no getting rid of it. it is NOT a curse because you didnt do anything to get it. but it depends on how you want to look at it, or how the family feels about God and blessings a curses. I wouldn't want it, but if I had it I wouldn't want it gone!
hope that helped!

There are so many form of autism. There are some that are high functioning which means they are really smart and can do everything a normal person can, I know someone who is high functioning and she cand draw amazingly. It just depends how you want to look at it.,

I am a coach for special olypics and have been for a while and i'm coaching bowling right now and two of the kids are autistic and both do things with their hands and one of them asks questions all the time but thats just part of it.

You just have to take it as it is.

Well, I do not have autism, but I firmly believe that social impairments are not curses at all when compensated for. for example, there are a few Autistic kiddos I know, not sure what kind, who excell in math, or have unbelievably vivid memories.

They're our generation's Einstiens and Newtons... a curse? Haw.

I have Autisme Spectrum Disorder and I don't see it as a curse. Ofcourse, I have lots of difficulties with it. My kind of ASS makes mee having Alters; it looks a bit like Dissociative Personality Disorder with me. It's because of that hole in my head...
But you know, if God gave me life, it's because I deserve it and because He knows that I can handle with it when I want.

My boyfriend has autism and I don't really know how I feel about it. He also has ADD and he is on meds. He refuses to let me see what he is like on them or how he is different because he said I'll curse him out.
If we stay together, I just hope it won't impact our kids.

I have a mild Autism along with another thing...forget what. Well I don't really think about it much. Sure I'm in a slightly special class, and thats what I always think about, but I care more about reaching goals, and getting over challenges that come with me, whether or whether not they come with my disablities.

Someone, somewhere out there is looking for you, just to say hello and give you a hug. Today, it's me. Hello. *hugs*

Re: Autism: Blessing or curse? I - December 8th 2009, 04:19 PM

I dated a guy back in early 2007 with Aspregers and it was hard for me to cope with him because he would throw stuff if he didn't get his own way and when i tried to help he would push me away sadly as much as i didnt want to i had to end the relationship because of the way he was towards me. Also my current boyfriend's best friend has it and he's the same if he doesn't get his own way he bosses people about when my boyfriend stays over his he keeps him up till 5am and kicks off if he doesnt.

I do understand the disability and it must be hard for the people who have it and their families
