my hand isnt the same as other peoples. - October 31st 2011, 05:59 PM

my fingers are small and turn different ways. its been like that since i was born. i used to be ashamed, and i would hide it and be afraid people would see it. i cried when people confronted me about it.

now im okay with it, i make jokes. and use it just like every one uses there hands. my dad has always wanted me to get surgery on it. when i was little i thought about it, and almost did it. but wanted to be different.

he asked me a few weeks ago about surgery, and up until then i didnt care how people looked at me, and i didnt care about jokes that were made or anything about it.... but now i catch myself hiding it, and getting offended-- thinking should i fix it?

im just not sure what to do...

Well, may I ask what they'd do to fix it? If you think it would make you feel more comfortable about your body, then do it. I had a leg difference, and rotated legs, I just had my 3rd surgery on my legs...and in all honesty, after surgery, my self confidence has boosted, because now people don't give me that look, and I know how that feels to have to hide, a body part that you are self conscious about.

I have a leg that is slightly wonky and I have been given the option of surgery on it - but the surgery would involve : having my leg broken in at least 3 times, and then having metal pins put into place and then having it in a cast for about 3 months.

The question you need to ask yourself, is it really something you want ? Is it affecting your life a-lot ? Are you happy with your hand how it is ?

It might be worth discussing it with a Dr to see what they can do to fix it and what the surgery would involve.

I decided against having surgery because of what the surgery would involve.

BROKE
the girl who seemed strong
CRUMBLED
the girl who always laughed
CRIED
the girl who never stopped trying finally
GAVE UP

she let her fake smile fade and as she did a tear rolled down her cheek and she whispered

' i can't do this anymore'

Thats like what I had, but I went through with all 3 surgeries, and still have one to go. But she is right, will this make your life better? What do YOU want to do?

I agree, if it's something that can be fixed and if it is something you want to go through with, then do it. You have to look at your options, what you want, the pros and cons and decide if you would be doing the surgery because you want it done, or because your father wants it done. I'm not saying you would get it done just because your dad would want you to, but I'm just saying that sometimes the opinions of others can make us do something we don't want to do, or really consider an option that we are uncomfortable with.
If it is something you have learned to live with and not let bother you, take that into account when making your decision, realize any changes that you would have to get used to and decide if you want to get the surgery.

Everyone else has pretty much said it. If you want to have the surgery, if you think it would make you feel more confident about yourself, then go for it! But if you're happy with the way it is, and you want to be 'different' then there's no need.
Don't put yourself through so much pain just to conform to what other people would recommend, unless it's what you want to do,

Good luck!<3

I agree with everyone else, you should decide if you want the surgery or not. It really just depends on what you want, don't let anyone else sway you.

As the responses seem to be repetitive, I am going to close this thread. OP, if you have any questions or would like this reopened, please PM me. :]
