Addicted to cracking my knuckles. - August 16th 2013, 06:06 PM

I've been cracking my knuckles for seven years. Yes I know, it's bad. I used to see my dad do it all the time, and now I do it. I didn't resolution of it as an addiction, but now I think it is. I pop then when I get nervous, or I'm in an awkward situation. Sometimes I don't even know I'm doing it until someone tells me to stop. I've tried to stop this habit numerous times, but if I don't pop my fingers, they start to hurt, so I do it a lot in a day. And when I'm around other people who crack their knuckles, I immediately have to crack mime because I heard that popping sound. I think that's what it is, I like the sound. I don't know. But yeah. I can't go a day without popping. Any way to stop?

Hey Ally!

I have the same problem, and I know how annoying it can be. I've done some research and here are some tips I've come across:

Find out why you're doing it, or the source of anxiety. Most times, it is a response to anxiety. Finding out just what is stressing you may be able to help.

Be aware if you're doing it. A lot of times, it is subconscious. I don't notice if I'm cracking my knuckles unless someone tells me. If you catch yourself cracking, try to figure out why.

Avoid thinking about it. This is a hard one, but if you keep yourself distracted it usually works.

Keep your hands busy. You could wear a rubber band or hold something in your hands to keep them busy.

Thank you very much I've discovered that if I just keep tapping something, I won't pop as much. I'm going to try and keep this distraction up ^^
