I've been dealing with a lot of stress the past couple weeks, and when I'm stressing out I often bite the inside of my lip without even realizing it until it becomes a big bleeding gash. Once I start I can't stop, it's getting crazy, and I absolutely hate this habit and wish I could kick it. Sometimes it even swells up and hurts for a week. It looks and feels so disgusting, and I wish I could stop, especially knowing I will see my boyfriend tomorrow night.
I used to have trichotillimania a while back, but I grew out of it, and now I'm stuck with this. I also tend to pick at my gums until they bleed. Am I the only one, and how do I break these habits? Don't cut me down just yet, I'll make things right again. Don't close your blinds on me <3 |

You're definitely not the only one. I have the habit of biting the inside of my cheeks and it takes a lot of conscious effort to stop myself. I've found chewing gum really helps me curb the habit. It keeps my mouth busy.
Also, try something like a stress ball. It might simply be that you need that repetitive movement and you can replace it with squeezing the stress ball. It's a little different because you're busying your hands instead of your mouth, but it's worth a try. Mostly, it's going to take willpower to stop it. A lot of times we do it unconsciously so you have to get yourself to first recognize when you're doing it and then make the decision to stop. Easier said than done, I know, but you'll get there. I hope this helps. Emily "Sometimes it's a struggle to be not who you want to be, not who you used to be, not who you're going to be, but just being right where you are, who you are" ![]() |

I just want you to know that you are not the only one. I will bite my lip whenever I am stressed or upset. Typically whenever I have the temptation to cut or snap. I would take the advice that Emily said above...if you need anything or want to talk then send me a message! I'm here for you! Hope everything works out!

Thanks to both of you, I'll definitely try chewing gum more. It's such a horrible habit, I'll do anything to stop it.

I thought I was the only person who does this.
I think Emily.'s advice is the best bet. ![]() Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune--without the words, And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I've heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. ~Emily Dickinson Live Help Operator 12/26/10 |
