Please don't laugh or tease me -
May 10th 2011, 03:33 PM
This is SOO embarrassing, but I'm 13 years old and still sleeping with a "Security Blankie". My mom says that I'll eventualy grow out of it, but I want it gone NOW. I don't want to be sleeping with my "Blankie" 'til' I'm an adult! How do I stop sleeping with it? I grew out of my teddy bear Beary, but how do I grow out of my "Blankie"?

I would try sleeping with it on the nightstand, and when you can take that, in a drawer, and just farther and farther away until you no longer need to know where it is. You can always keep it safely in a drawer or box so that you have it but are no longer sleeping with it.

Perhaps you could substitute the "blankie" for something more subtle. For example my girlfriend has a small piece of silk ribbon that she holds when she sleeps. It's barely noticeable and not as embarrassing as a security blanket.

My sister had a doll she got a birth until she was 19, the day before graduation she quit, but still keeps it in a secure wooden box under her bed. There is nothing wrong with it, and you will grow out of it, however simply stopping cold turkey is probably best.

I'm 15, and I sleep holding my boyfriend's jacket, and two stuffed animals.
A security blanket shouldn't be embarrassing And you shouldn't treat it as such But I do understand wanting to get over that But you will when your ready. You'll just stop. PM or VM me at anytime <3 ~Mandiie. |

Dont feel too bad about this. Most ppl on this site understand most anything you go thru and wanna help. I sleep with a stuffed monkey in my hand.. i can go without it but im much more comfortable holding something. Some ppl are just like that. I agree with Jack tho if ur looking to ditch the blanket

Then again when you're 13 I think people are meaner about stuff like this. When you turn 17/18 people don't really care.

im 20 and i still sleep with a blanket, two teddy's and a soft toy. i don't see anything wrong with it, when i went to my friends sleepovers or something i would just bring my eyeore with me or a smaller soft toy and put it inside my sleeping bag so nobody really notices.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, nor is it something you should be embarrassed about, but if you really want to stop sleeping with it, I'd just try to replace it with something more subtle, as most other posters are saying. I'm 14 and I still have several stuffed animals that I sleep with, and a pillow pet!

I don't see that as a bad thing at all.
I still sleep with my baby blanket and I'm sixteen years old. I also sleep with multiple of my stuffed animals. It's normal to carry something important from your childhood with you while you grow up. I might be crazy. But have I told you lately that I love you? You're the only reason that I'm not afraid to fly. <3 |

I know you've found an answer already, and have had some good suggestions, so I'm merely posting here to kind of help reassure you that no, you're not some sort of weirdo to us for having a security object to sleep with.
I'm 23 years old, and I don't like the idea of sleeping alone. I have the worst time trying to sleep when my boyfriend is not here, if his side of the bed is empty. So, I'll usually pile some stuff on his side when he's sleeping at home, such as the extra blanket, extra pillow, and right now I even have some of my hoodies I was sorting through on that side of the bed. When I get REALLY upset, like have a bad night, feel like crying, or even just extra-lonely, I'll hold a stuffed animal (if my cat isn't around to pet). I have a stuffed Jack Skellington, and he's sitting on my bed. I was holding him the other night because I got freaked out over a centipede. ![]() Hell, my mom is a couple years shy of 50, and if my dad isn't home (he travels for work), she has a hard time sleeping in her bedroom half the time, and she'll sleep on the couch. The only way she can comfortably sleep on her bed alone is if she has the dogs in her room, and they both jump up on the bed with her. ![]() Point is, everybody has something that makes them feel secure, especially when they try to sleep. Just, some things are more subtle than others, is all.

Personally, I don't sleep with a stuffed animal, although I do wake up hugging my pillows a lot. Anyway, it's definitely nothing to be ashamed of!
As you can see from the responses, it's not as uncommon as one might think.

I'm 21, a recent college graduate, and I STILL sleep with 4 or 5 (right now I actually have 6 xD ) teddy bears on my bed, and I usually cuddle one of them. It's not so much a security item for me, but more having the need to hold something when I sleep alone.
It's perfectly fine. My fiance doesn't care that I have stuffed animals around, and when we do sleep together (JUST sleep, no sexytime til marriage), all of my stuffed animals go on the floor, in a little basket because I have a human teddybear to cuddle with. :P It's totally okay, and you will grow out of the -need- to have it. “Don't get too comfortable with who you are at any given time. No one's here to laugh at or tease anyone, as I'm sure you've already noticed from all these responses, so you don't have to worry about that
![]() I always used to sleep cuddling my teddy Norman until last summer. I was going camping and trekking round Africa for a month with a group from school and I knew I wouldn't be able to take my teddy. About a month before we were due to leave, I decided I would try sleeping without him. It felt very strange and I'd often end up bunching up my duvet so I could cuddle that There were a few nights when I felt like I needed him, so I took him to bed, but I was mostly ok. And by the time we were camping in Africa, it didn't bother me at all that I didn't have him. Persistence is key

I still can't sleep without holding something cool. It's a pillow these days, but it used to be a bear when I was younger. It's to the point where I have to rotate them to keep the 'coolness' nice and fresh. Can't just sleep empty handed, unless I'm huddled around myself....

I still sleep with my Bankie, I just put away my baby pillow. I think it is normal, and when I go to a friends house it comes with me. Sometimes I even carry it in my booksac to school or my boyfriends car. It is okay.. But I has a friend suggest taking a string off of it (it is knitted) and just keeping that with me. But no its normal and its okay

Hey, I'm 15 and I still sleep with two stuffed animals.
It doesn't make you a bad person. All of my friends (and boyfriends) have been perfectly okay with it. I think it's still accepted when you're 13. I really wouldn't freak out about it.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

I know you've had a lot of answers to this already, but I just thought I'd add to the general consensus.
I'm 18 and I sleep with a bear my nanny gave me when I was a baby and a tiger my girlfriend gave me called Pubes. My bear has always come on holiday with me so I can cuddle him and I still sleep with Pubes even when my girlfriend is here. It's normal to want to cuddle or hold something when you sleep, like you said, for security. It's natural and nothing to be ashamed of.

Okay i JUST got over sleeping with my Blankie and if you truly want it gone then try this..
First, try a couple days of sleeping with it at the end of the bed and not holding it. If you do this move on to the next step... Second, put it in a night stand or drawer and sleep like that for a couple nights Then just keep building on all the nights you sleep without it in your arms.. eventually you wont need it (you may still want it, i mean i still want mine n its been months) but if you try and go back you just have to resist the urge and find alternatives like what others have said.. It worked for me so I hope it works for you! <3 Remember, The steeper the hill... The better the veiw in the end <3

I still sleep with two stuffed animals. A giant koala named Bobo and a teddy bear named... Teddy Bear. (I was a creative child xd ) There's nothing to be ashamed of. If you're worried about it, put it up on a shelf or something where you can see it, but you're not necessarily sleeping with it.

As others have said, if you're embarrassed, you could replace it with something more subtle.
But I personally don't think you're weird for that! I slept with a stuffed animal until a few years ago, then I switched to a pillow, now I'm back to a stuffed animal. I sleep with one who looks just like my old dog, & he's just the right size. It's comforting. I need something to squeeze the crap out of while I sleep ![]() Don't worry about it though! If you want, trying gradually sleeping with smaller blankets, until you're left with a barely noticeable one.
