Completed my certificate for Mental health first aid training - May 1st 2017, 01:58 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Yesterday I went to an 8 hour long training course for crisis response and mental health first aid. This was for working in the adult population. I was meaning to go to the one for youth in crisis that was held today but it took place in a different location than the first one and didn't seem like I could get there with public transportation that well so I didn't go.

The course felt like a refresher because I have experience in this already, however I am so glad I went to it. IT was intense, especially having just gotten out of hospital a few days ago but so worth it. I learned a lot and it filled gaps that I wasn't sure about or had questions about. The facilitators were great and I met someone there who sat next to me and we became friends. We exchanged resources like I told her of the community center I go to becsuse she said her sister is struggling. And she told me that she is a paraprofessional and works in after school and she had me considering those as options till I get a better understanding of exactly what I want to do.

One thing I really liked is that it was a Muslim organization facilitating this, the 2 facilitators are muslim, most of the people taking the course are young adult muslims. It is so important that an organization like this exists. I felt really connected becsuse while I'm not mudlim, I have Arab heritage and am familiar with the Arabic phrases they use and I felt comfort from that. I also felt like there were topics discussed that are important and relevant to minority ethnic groups that would not have been discussed if it wasn't run by a minority ethnic group. And religious topics that secular organizations would not have touched on. (Like how to cope when your parents think their child is possessed by a demon rather than having a mental illness or in Islam substance use is "haram" and how if someone is suffering from a substance abuse problem, how you shouldn't use religion to demonize them (or demonize them in any way but it is common for religious parents to talk about going to hell, God, sins etc as a way to shame)

So yes, very relatable. As a kid, I experienced trauma relating to religion so I appreciate the work that he does.

Well done on completing your mental health first aid training! Even though you couldn't make the youth one and you had only just come out of hospital yourself, it sounds like the training went really well for you! Interesting to hear that it was facilitated by a Muslim organisation and that you learnt things you might not have otherwise had the chance to learn.

Great job completing the training for your mental health first aid certificate! It's great that you were able to make a friend there and exchange resource information with them as well. The fact that it was run by a Muslim organization definitely makes it seem like it was a valuable training - it's good to hear that they touched on topics specific to members of minority groups. Even feeling like it was just a refresher, I'm sure it was very interesting and that you were able to take a lot away.
