Worried about my friend - May 18th 2012, 11:41 PM

I have a friend who I'm pretty close to and her mom is really hurting her self esteem.

From what I know, her mom calls her worthless, stupid, and always tries to make her do stuff or she'll take away some of my friend's privileges such as pulling her out of band. Her mom also gets really drunk almost every night and it makes my friend not want to go home because she's scared. She usually laughs about some stuff her mom does, but I know her and I can tell that it really gets to her sometimes. Her mom also never gives her rides to school and so she has to walk like over half an hour to get home or has to find a ride.

She had an emotional breakdown in class a couple weeks ago and I feel really bad for her but don't know what to do...

Well there's 2 things I can think of.

1). Just continue to be there for her. Offer her support, let her always know you care and you love her.

2). Tell someone. Thats the hardest option, I know from experience that it is. It takes a lot of bravery, but sometimes we need to be brave to help ourselves or someone else. Go to any adult who you think can help. This includes school councelors, parents, teachers, anyone.

Hi there,

I think you're a great friend for trying to find a way to help your friend. It means you care a lot about her and that must mean a lot to her!

Honestly, it seems like her mom needs some help. If her alcohol usage is becoming a problem with daily behavior and how she treats her daughter, then something needs to be done. And, of course, that seems to be the case.

Like the above poster said, there are two options: 1) continue being there for her and helping her through this or 2) tell someone and get some help. If you go ahead with the second option, you should be sure that it's what you want to do. Although it's the right thing to do, your friend may be upset that you told at first. After the initial shock, she will be thankful that you care enough to do something so brave for her. I think your best bet is to tell a teacher and they'll probably help you more by getting in contact with someone who can help further (police, rehab centers, or another guardian for your friend).

I hope that everything works out.
