Domestic Abuse - August 11th 2019, 07:43 AM

I thought things were getting better for me but now I am suffering from domestic abuse and I can't really talk to anyone about it. Basically a family member keeps hitting me almost every day. I'm not going to say who at the moment as I don't feel comfortable enough to as I am terrified. But its getting all the time. Its not just a gentle slap either, its always full on and sometimes more than once.

I am so sorry you are going through domestic abuse, Michaela. It sounds like a very distressing situation when it's a family member that is hitting you with some force. You don't have to say who, but you don't deserve to be treated this way at all.

Is there a way for you to spend less time around this particular family member? Maybe try spending some time outside of the house when they are indoors, or avoid areas where they may be (for example, if they are in the living room, spend time in your bedroom etc). The other option is to try to limit your contact with the family member to only spending time with them when other people are around (if possible). Abuse tends to happen in secret, when no-one else is around, so if you can spend time with the abusive person when others are around, it may lessen the abuse or if not, you'll have someone who will witness it and will hopefully defend you and support you.

Thinking long term, do you have any plans to get away from the abusive family member? Moving out can be good, though I understand not always possible in certain financial situations. You could check out homeless shelters or domestic abuse refuges and see if you are eligible for a place, if need be.

I understand that you feel you can't talk to anyone about it, but it's still good to get some emotional support as abuse can take it's toll on your mental and emotional well being. If friends and family isn't an option, you can try looking for a domestic abuse counsellor or organisations such as Women's Aid. We are always here for you too
