Question Talking about past abuse - October 31st 2009, 12:46 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of rape or abuse, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I don't really know if this would be triggering but I wanted to put the prefix up in case it was to someone.....

I'm in therapy right now, with a wonderful therapist whom I love and trust, for a number of different reason....eating disorder, bi-polar disorder, OCD, past sexual abuse and about a million other things. I've never been able to handle talking about the abuse to any, including my boyfriend. And yesterday when I went to therapy I finally thought I was ready to talk as the flashbacks and nightmares are getting very intense and I completely shut down...I wasted the whole hour session because I was too chicken. Now I'm REALLY beating myself up over the fact I didn't talk but I just feel soooooooo weird talking to someone about what happened to me multiple times....Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can handle opening up and discussing this topic??

Thanks!

I don't think you 'wasted' your session. Ok, so you might not have said anything and you may have shut down, but you went feeling ready to talk, and even if it turns out that you weren't perhaps ready the fact that you felt that way in the first place is a positive and not a waste. Does your therapist know just how hard you're finding talking about your abuse? I think talking to them about why you're finding it so difficult might help and from there she'll be able to work with you to find a way that you feel able to talk. There are other ways of opening up and working through what has happened without actually talking. Perhaps working with your therapist through other ways could help.

Yeah she knows how difficult I find it to talk about it. Thanks for your advice :-)
