Question Medications - Are you on any? - May 2nd 2012, 01:41 PM

I was wondering if anyone else was on medication, or has been, for their mental illness(es)?

If you are, which ones, and are they helpful for you?

I've been on a variety over the years, but i'm currently on Citalopram, Olanzapine and Clonazepam for my BPD and comorbid Depression. That combination seems to best work to stabilise me and put me on a functional level.

NB:
This thread does NOT encourage or discourage use of medications to treat psychiatric conditions, nor do the opinions of others endorse affectivity or deffectiveness of any prescribed medicines; the same medication can affect people differently, so always consult with your physician/psychiatrist/mental health professional primarily.

I take Clonazepam for my Anxiety from work, and that's all for now. When I see my GP again, I'm supposed to be starting medication to treat Bipolar Disorder.

But, the Clonazepam works beautifully for Anxiety.

MICHY!

You get my first post back here! Wooohoo!
I'm still deciding and waiting for my actual diagnose, but looks like I'll be taking citalopram. :/ Not too happy about that. Meh.

Clonazepam, primarily used to treat Epilepsy, is a very effective benzodiazepine, mostly because it's got a long half-life compared to the others. Personally, i've found it very useful, but initially it's made me agitated and angry when I started taking it again. So, depending, I may go back on Lorazepam or Diazepam.

What are your concerns/dissatisfactions with Citalopram? Or is it generally about starting SSRIs again?

Glad you're back!

Yeah, I'm generally uncomfortable with thinking on going back on meds. I remember gaining quite a bit of weight (which is in various ways a bit of an open wound for me) and the withdrawal was horrible! I don't really want to be dependent on anything right now, you know?

I totally understand that. Even in the non-addictive sense. But I think if it helps in the short-term, with the overwhelming stresses and anxieties, it may be worth considering. It's your choice, in the end

Lorazepam was my anxiety medication before Clonazepam. Problem with Lorazepam is that you can build up a tolerance (my dose went from 0.5mg to trying 1.5mg slowly over a course of time and it didn't help). So that's actually why I was put on Clonazepam.

Benzos definitely build up tolerance very quickly, hence the change, which was part of the reason for my switch too.

Actually, Clonazepam is one of the rare ones that people usually don't build up tolerance to, which is a big part of why the psychiatrist suggested it. :P

That would make sense, given its prescribed usage for various conditions. Still addictive, though Glad it helps you, too.

I'm on Lithium and Tegretol for my Bipolar Disorder and Ativan for anxiety but I almost never need to take it anymore. I find that my medication used to work better but has recently been not as effective unfourtunately.
And according to my Psychiatrist I've been on all the other mood stabilizers except Geodon which I don't eat enough to take and can't afford anyways, so I guess I'll have to live with it for now.

I answered yes, but I'm currently not, just have been in the past. I was on Escitalopram for depression and it was very helpful.

Hmmm, can I add to the poll?

I've been offered that I think, as well as Zoloft, but mainly been on either Fluoxetine (Prozac) or Citalopram, as is my current SSRI.

An ex's girlfriend is on Lithium for Bipolar Disorder, and she's found her meds to be less effective I think, on a longer-term basis. Could you try another mood stabiliser that works for you, perhaps? I've read that Olanzapine or Seroquel can be very useful, also in combination (for some) with Fluoxetine to stabilise BP mood swings/delusions. You could ask your psychiatrist about those.

Rick has tried Seroquel (I know because I asked him about it), and his Bipolar Disorder has more Manic episodes, so an anti-depressant wouldn't help. If his psychiatrist has said he's tried every mood stabilizer, I'm assuming it means those ones too. I do know he's tried many medications, and various combinations.

Hmmm, Fluox and Olanz can help in combination for BPs, but not for everyone, of course. I'm no psychiatrist, but i'm aware of enough medications for different disorders. I don't seek to know everything of course, and primary info and help is from mental health professionals, but Thorazine (Chlorpromazine) is an old one used to treat both BP and Schizophrenia, so just suggesting that too.

I've been on Seroquel, Zyprexa, Risperidal, Prozac, Effexor, Celexa, Depakote, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Lithium, Tegretol, and Ativan
In a bunch of different combinations, only things that remotely worked are the ones I'm on now, Prozac, Effexor, and Celexa all caused me to be hospitalized because they made my mood swings more dangerous.

You seem to have gone through the length and breadth of mood stabilisers/antipsychotics! Although not Thorazine? I'm glad your current combo works best for you.

I was finally diagnosed with depression after 10 years of struggling (If you call my doctor agreeing with how I said I felt and trying to throw pills at me as a diagnosis) Anyway, I am refusing medication at the moment because I am ALOT more stable. I'm also on a lot of other things for physical problems, so I would want to get off of some before adding any more. I've said though, that I would consider medication if I start to feel like I need it.

That seems sensible. Yes, some doctors/psychiatrists can tend to throw medication at people instead of aiming to resolve their core issues, which is more a psychologists field of expertise. But a combination of therapies and medication can be helpful for some people. You seem to know what's best for you, though Without sounding patronising!

Yeah, I'm on meds, but waaaay too much.
Although they do keep me stable so I can kinda ignore the amount.

Quetiapine & Sertaline are the main ones. High doses of both. Have tried many others but these are the two that work best.

Yes, i am on Celexa for Depression and anxiety. It seems to work ok for now.
I used to be on Zoloft but it had bad side effects.

Yeah for depression. I used to be on Fluoxetine and then Citalopram. Neither worked for me, Citalopram made me worse :/ Still kinda experimenting but at the moment I'm on Sertraline. And I've also had sleeping pills inbetween can't remember what they were called, had a few different types but they all began with 'Z'
Ooh and I also have Diazepam inbetween every now and again to keep me cool

I voted "no" because I'm not currently taking anything. But in the past . . .

Ritalin SR - this was before they changed the ADHD diagnosis to executive functioning difficulties, but it did help a lot despite making me irritable. When I was on IR it messed with me and I ended up taking a large overdose of painkillers for no particular reason, hence the change to SR.

Epilim (sodium valproate) - the first psychiatrist I had was of the opinion that I had a mood disorder similar to bipolar, not merely depression, and due to a head injury I had he thought maybe this medication, which is also used to treat epilepsy, would work well. It didn't.

Lorazepam & diazepam - both from GP, both to help sleep.

And most recently, I was on Citalopram by itself, which led to a hospitalisation, then Olanzapine by itself, which led to a hanging attempt and time in respite, then both at the same time, then after a paracetamol overdose they thought they'd add lithium too, just to make it fun. I was on that combination for 3 or 4 months.

I am currently taking nothing and am being observed to see what happens. I was really low for a few weeks but I feel alright now so we'll see

I am currently on duloxetine for depression. Although in the past I have been on fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, mirtazepine and quetiapine. I am hoping to see my doctor soon about getting on something for my anxiety as it is causing me a lot of difficulties.

Currently, I'm on Cymbalta for depression. However, it's too expensive as there's no generic brand, so I'm in the process of weaning off of it. I've started to take Wellbutrin in its place, because I've had it in the past and it worked well. Plus there's no weight gain as a side effect, which is optimal

I've tried a shitload. :'D My favourite ones by far have been Lamictal, Amitriptyline (while it worked, might go back on it), Citalopram (but only at a high dose) and Propranolol (max dose, this is mainly for my heart though). I think that's it for ones that helped...Yeah, I'm still on some.

I think I've been on nearly 20. Right now I'm on Sertaline and Arripirozole.

I've been on fluoxetine (Prozac), trazadone (sleeping pill), and klonopin. I can't remember the other for the life of me. I'm currently not taking anything but I'm looking into starting Wellbutrin and getting back on the trazadone.

My psych today also suggested either Quetiapine or Sodium Valproate for my mood swings, if the Olanzapine weight gain side effect bothered me too much

Re: Medications - Are you on any? - May 3rd 2012, 04:48 PM

I've tried loooooads of different pills. I started on Prozac, then Duloxetine, then Citalopram, and Now I'm on Zoloft and Lyrica together. Zoloft seemed to work pretty well at the higher dose and whilst I still feel depressed, I'm not falling into the severe depressive episodes that I was. The Lyrica is to boost my mood.

I've been on, over the years, Fluoxetine (Prozac), Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram (briefly/once), Diazepam (Valium), Lorazepam, Clonazepam, Olanzapine (Zyprexa), Quetiapine (once), Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and Zopiclone. I was offered Sertraline (Zoloft) as an SSRI replacement, but stuck with Citalopram.

I think my current combo works best right now, besides needing few dose alterations in future, if necessary.

Wow. Just realised how many pills that actually is!

I am taking Rexipra and Naltima right now for depression and stuff. Though it needs to be reviewed soon.

I was starting to take Zoloft, Abilify, And Hydroxizine (however you spell it), but I'm seeing a new psychiatrist soon which means I will likely get a different prescription, so I never got the chance to really try those. The last ones I really tried were Invega, Neurontin, and Celexa (celexa made my anxiety worse!) I did not like any of those, and so I was switching to the others. I've tried many other combinations as well, such as Tegretol, Prozac, and Xanax, but they did not work either.

I've been on ADD meds since I was 8 (about to turn 20).
Current ADD medication: Daytrana
Anti-depressants (as well as decrease anxiety): Effexor
And also I take fish-oil to help with my mental health...and it does help...

I'm on the generic of Zoloft (Sertraline) and I take Abilify off-label. I also take Xanax as needed, also for OCD. I rarely have to take the Xanax though.
