Prozac tolerance? - June 11th 2012, 01:41 AM

I was prescribed Prozac back in February. I started on 20mg and moved up to 40mg. Eventually the 40mg wasn't working anymore so my doctor moved me up to 60mg a day. When I first went up to 40mg it worked well for a few weeks and then it stopped working as well. Now, despite the higher dose, I'm still having a lot of problems with depression. I don't feel it all day every day but when I feel it, it hits me HARD. I don't want to get out of bed and I feel like an elevator is crushing me, I don't feel like talking to anyone and I just want to sleep. Is it possible for me to have become too tolerant of Prozac in less than 6 months?

Yup, it's possible, but it's actually more likely that Prozac simply isn't the right medication for you. If they keep increasing your dosage, and the same thing happens each time, then it's possible that you need a different anti-depressant.

If I were you, I'd bring this up with a doctor - the point of anti-depressants is to get rid of the disabling effects of depression, and at the moment it sounds like Prozac isn't doing it for you, so you and your doctor need to work together to come up with a plan that's more beneficial to you.

I lasted on prozax for maybe 2 months, at that point I was so messed up I attempted suicide. It just wasn't the right medication for me, which may be the case for you. I want to encourage you to talk to your doctor about looking for other options. I promise you there is better medications you just need to keep looking. It took me four or five different changes before I found the right one. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi there,

Like the others have done so, I would like to encourage you to talk to your doctor about this. I've been on around 20 medications and I am still trying to find ones which I benefit from. Everything works differently for different people. Its important you and you doctor work together to find the one which helps you the best.

Jessie
