Unhappy Fear of sharks!! - July 20th 2012, 04:15 AM

Okay. I have this INTENSE fear. Of sharks. I know what youre thinking: well, yeah, alot of people are.'
But, for me, if I even see a picture of one, it scares me half to death. Its like there is this tingle al over my body and the urge to scream and hit and shiver.

It may have to do with this: when i was little, maybe 4, me and my family went to the aquarium, back when we had money. It was in NY, so it was really really big. Anyways, we went into the shark tunnel. I looked at the little sharks and was kind of quiet, when all of the sudden this HUUUUGE shark noses the glassx and scares me okut of my pants. I was only four, so I started crying and sobbing. My dad, who does not live with me now, picked me up and carried me out, and gave me a jolly ranger. I remember that day perfectly. From that day on, ive always hated jolly rangers, sharks, and just about every aquatic animal there is. Which is weird because i love animals deeply.

My sisters make fun of my fear all the time.
So how can i get over it? I cant live like this. Seriously.

You know what, this is excellent. On your own, you've taken all the steps you shoud have..

Most fears are linked to traumatic childhood experiences. 90% of treatment if figuring out what caused it. By knowing what caused your fear you're doing well.

Better yet, you've identified that the fear is irrational. If you think your fear is fine/normal you won't want to "fix" it.

The best piece of news it that you want to change you fear! Without the will to overcome it, you won't get beter.

Proceeding to handle such an intense fear on your own is counter productive, I would seek further help for roughly a month.

Oh, great! Well, not the fear part, but the fact that we know the cause! Okay! So.......now what? Im not sure I want to speak to a real therapist. They cost money, and my family is low on that.

Here's the problem, here on Teenhelp we have two therapists (that I'm aware of), Robin and Bobby. Bobby is rarely active, and hasn't displayed a real piece of proof that he is indeed a real practicing doctor. Although knowledgeable, his opinion cannot be taken more seriously than the average user. Robin, although skilled in dealing with family and friend issues, she isn't currently equipped to help you fully.

Then you have the people who have went through similair issues, and although their imput is usually great, the problem with personal experience is that you cannot post it as a source. This causes a great deal of doubt and unfortunately, unreliability.

You also have your armchair phsycologists, like myself. We're generally people interested in psychology but have no experience with dealing with real patients. This means that althogh our information is good we lack personal experience and we lack the people skills most phsycologists/therapists posess.

We are a great community, and we're a good support group. Unfortunately we are unable to provide help for an issue as serious as this. I would try recomending some of the most basic treatments for fear, but seeing as you have a severe fear they could easily end up hurting more than helping.

If your family is on a healthcare plan, it's likely this is covered. Your school may have a counsellor or psychologist for free, or maybe try seeking out a teacher at your school who teaches pshycology, if you know/trust them. You could also find a different web rescourse that would offer professional help, although most do charge you, the fees are often reduced.

Anyhow, if you have any questions or concerns, PM me. If you ever need someone to talk to quicky, I'm avaliable for roughly 12 of every 24 hours of the day.

Okay, great! Thanks! I should try to speak to the school counselor when school starts up again! This was helpful, especially since whenever I try to tell someone about my phobia they think I am overexagerrating to get attention, but it's not like that at all.

Glad I could help. This issue isn't going to get much worse over time, so there's no problem with seeking help in a few months. Now the you have a plan, things are likely going to go smoothly.
