Exclamation Fear of catching a disease - July 20th 2012, 06:16 AM

I have noticed for the past few weeks that I have a fear of catching a disease. Like it's normal to be afraid to catch a disease but I am VERRRRY afraid. When the littlest thing happens to me like throbbing arms or a headache a few days happens, I get very afraid that I came in contact with a disease. I always bug my parents to take me to the doctor because i am afraid. Yet when I go to the doctor, it's a little thing. Like last time, my eyes, ears and head were all hurting and it turned out I had a virus and in my head I thought it was something deadly. I think I have a phobia but i'm not sure I try to tell my parents but they don't think it's serious. What do I do? Should I tell my doctor the next time I visit? And if there is a fear of diseases, what is it called?

Re: Fear of catching a disease - July 20th 2012, 10:03 AM

Hi! I am not currently aware of a name. The most popular 'name' for it is simply Disease Phobia. It is closely related tto OCD. If you are diagnosed proffessionally with it, they will give you drugs or medication. But be wary: most medications are only temporary, and going to a therapist may only reverse progress and make you more curious annd paranoid. When thinking about a Disease or the possibility of getting one, someone with Disease Phobia will experiance:
Shortness of breath
Uneven breathing
uneven heartbeat

I would talk to your doctor right away, as the phobbia may grow so that you can fear to even leave the house at times.

Be careful.
