Unhappy Am I Schizophrenic or is it just over thinking? - February 18th 2013, 06:24 PM

I've been exhibiting weird behavior lately so I did the worst thing I could do and look up my symptoms. I could be wrong, and in fact I'm pretty sure I am. But I just want some advice.
Okay well I've been extremely paranoid that others are plotting to kill me. Like my closest friends, family and even my teachers.
I've been hearing voices a lot more than usual.
I keep wanting to memorize things people say, whether in real life or on TV.
I don't watch much TV, but the next day, I'll mix up if what I remember was a dream or om TV or something I read possibly.
Sometimes when I talk, I either slur my words or combine them where it doesn't make sense or I stop talking in the middle of a sentence or when I'm writing, I'll miss a few words or forget to complete words or sentences.
Other times, feel emotionless or other times I'll have inappropriate joy or sadness.
And I can't maintain eye contact or I'll zone out, but sometimes that's because I'll be hearing voices. And my parents have commented on my social withdrawal.
Please help me.
*I'm not asking for a diagnosis, I'm already on medication, and I'm currently seeing a therapist.*

Sadly nobody on here can tell you. I would suggest seeing a professional because they are the only ones who can actually diagnose you. The only reason is because you have to eliminate both physical and other mental reasons for these symptoms. Lots of other mental health things have a lot of the same symptoms so it can be really easy to misjudge. Sometimes things we have physically can cause you to have symptoms of things like schizophrenia. So if you are really worried and would like to get that figured out talk to your doctor or see about a psychiatrist.

You've already made the first step to getting help, which is reaching out for it. Although, no one on TeenHelp is a doctor, so we can't diagnose you. I am schizophrenic and I've done similar things that you have done. Don't get me wrong, this does not mean you have it. It could be anything. It does sound like something of concern, though, and I suggest you see a psychiatrist about it.

One thing you can do is keep distracted. I know how hard it is to do that with all this voices and paranoid thoughts going round in your head. It's difficult, but possible. If you can't think straight enough to write out things, try doing something a little simpler like colouring or drawing. You should also try challenging your thoughts. If you're feeling paranoid about something, like others plotting to kill you, think of reasons why they would possibly be doing that at all (which they most likely aren't). Your friends, family, and teachers are most likely not murderers. They try to help, yes? Your teachers help in you learning. Your friends aide in making you happy, as does your family.

Ultimately these voices may go away on their own, but they may not. This is why I suggest seeing a doctor about it because you seem to know it's not normal. The doctor can help with medications that can take away these things completely, or mostly. If anything they will help you manage them and live with them, which can be done. This doctor may suggest a therapist, whom can teach you many ways to combat these thoughts and voices. Is it possible for you to talk to your parents or your school guidance counsellor?

Feel free to message me anytime on here. I'd love to help more if I can.
Stay strong.

- Immy.

I love the idea of distraction, and I've used distraction for so long now that it just isn't working any longer. At least the majority of the time. I usually use photography, music, and coloring books. And I try to use that technique as well, Immy, but they're just so convincing that you feel like you have no choice but to believe them. I'll try harder to convince myself out of those thoughts, though.
