Low self-esteem/extremely sensitive? - March 3rd 2013, 10:17 AM

Hi.
So, basically, my self-esteem is incredibly lower than it should be. I feel like I'm hyper-sensitive to people's words- if someone says something that's even slightly rude, it will make me extremely upset. Small things, when I think about them, could still get me upset ages after they happen. I've been this way ever since I was a lot younger. I tend to feel left out a lot, too. And another thing that happens with me is in gym class, whenever we do testing or jus a sport in general, I get ridiculously down because I feel like I"m constantly embarrassing myself.
Is there a way to get over stuff like this?

I've always felt like this too. The easiest way to get over it in my opinion is really try to put yourself in the other person's shoes and try to understand where they were coming from (with the sensitive words bit).

Easiest way not to think about stuff that happened ages ago that still makes you feel like crap? Distract yourself by reading or something of the sort. Once you take your mind off of it for a bit it tends to go away for that time. It definitely isn't a permanent way to deal with it but it definitely works as a temporary thing.

It definitely does sound like social anxiety to me though. Laughter is the best medicine though. If you make a joke about what you feel bad about and other people laugh, it takes the pressure off. At least that's what helped me deal with it.

I hope this helps you somewhat.

Thankyou Much appreciated.
I don't think this is social anxiety for the reason that I don't think my emotions that I get related to this are severe enough. I've read about social anxiety and while whatI described in my initial post does really affect me, it's not the drastic, over-the-top affect that social anxiety seems to give, from what I've read. Unless it's slight social anxiety.
I'll definitely talk about these symptoms in my next psychiatrist appointment, though- do you think it's worth mentioning?

It could be slight social anxiety, but it's more probable that it stems from depression and your low sense of self worth.

And if you feel like it's bothering you, it's always worth mentioning. =]
