Weird dreams - April 1st 2013, 01:25 AM

This probably doesn't fit here, but dreams are a mental construction and we're dealing with abnormalities so screw it.

Anyone else have very strange dreams? Especially after going on medication -- I take Effexor and occasionally valerian to help me sleep and my dreams are just off the wall. I can't even explain them; like in one I went to this strange university with ghosts living in a bell tower and this giant mechanical "engineering" complex in the basement. I joined the cycling team and was racing bikes up and down stairs and shit. Stuff like that, or strange goings on at work, etc. It seems to me that dream interpretations have fallen by the wayside since psychoanalysis went out of favor, but they are very interesting to say the least.

I'll have weird dreams and/or nightmares if I'm sick, too warm, have indigestion, etc. Basically, if there's something going on with me physically, it's bound to affect my dreams... so I think that's a big reason why I don't give too much credit to dream analysis. I wouldn't be surprised if these drugs were causing you to have these dreams, because the drugs are affecting you physically (even if you can't see the outward changes, as you would with me if I was feverish). I also know that what I think about right before I go to sleep has a good chance of being incorporated into my dreams (ex. I think about a project that was just assigned to me, and I have a nightmare about being late for a final exam).

Re: Weird dreams - April 2nd 2013, 06:11 PM

It's weird... I don't dream often (not ones where I'll have the vaguest sense of them ever happening in the morning at least) but sometimes I do and it's about stuff going on in my life... Like I had a dream about marrying this male-friend of mine one time because I was really conflicted about my feelings for him and I think it just sorta cropped up in my sleep... I had a dream about my mom dying one time and having to go to her funeral, which i think was about the fact that I'd recently moved away for university and had something to do with my relationship to my family as a result of moving cause I am close to my mom but not so close my dad and idk, a weird way of popping up a "loss of the childhood way of family" I guess

I get horrible nightmares if I take gravol, but if I don't take it I can't sleep because I get really bad stomachs at night.
