Question Needless guilt - November 6th 2013, 02:27 AM

Lately I have been feeling an almost constant sense of guilt, even though I'm trying harder than ever in most aspects of my life. I just don't understand why, but almost every time I interact with other people I'm not really close with (in other words anyone whos not a family member) I just feel like Ive done something wrong. I'll go home at the end of the day and just replay every last interaction in my head, which will spur on this sense of intense crippling guilt, even if logically I know I didn't do anything hurtful or wrong to anyone. Does anyone know what would cause this?

What sorts of situations tend to bring about the feelings of guilt? For example, you could feel guilty about saying or doing something that could have hurt another person's feelings. Other times, people will experience "regret" over things they didn't say or do (such as failing to speak up and tell a joke when the opportunity arose).

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is a common treatment modality used to challenge the negative thoughts people have. I wrote an article on countering anxiety a while back, which you may find to be helpful. The "mental" section in particular may be useful in helping you determine how you can begin to challenge the negative thoughts that pop into your head and create feelings of guilt or regret.
