A case manager? - March 23rd 2014, 12:55 AM

So I was assigned a mental health case manager and I don't know what one is. Does anyone else?

I thought that a case manager was someone who helped people who couldn't help themselves in certain situations, but I don't have any problems there.

My case manager told me it was to help me get on my feet and to get my own place, a solid job, and a nice income. Once I am able to get those she said I would be able to leave the case management system.

This is all because my first counselor who passed me onto another one suggested it. She was my case manager before this new one and didn't do anything with me, but this new one is meeting me once a week to do things like go get lunch and go for walks. Is that normal case manager stuff? Doing things with their clients? My current case manager wants me to go to the flea market and zoo with a few other of her clients.

I'm not a case manager, but I know what one is. Basically, if you are seeking mental health services and also need other things, for example, housing, stable income, resources for food, transportation, child care etc, then you are assigned a case manager and their job is to coordinate all the different services from various agencies to make sure you get everything you need in addition to your mental health care. I'm not really sure what's "normal" for a case manager to do or not do. I know one of my professors used to be one and he would take his elderly client to the grocery store and then help her unload the groceries. Others will meet with you in your home or in another public place.

The answer is...a bit of everything!

A Case Worker is your personal Social Worker in an agency. They do anything from unloading groceries and hanging out to making sure you're taking advantage of some services provided to you (example: low-cost therapy or medication assistance). Basically, they're there to assist you on your path in whatever way you need. Mental health issues are so varied among people, case workers try to alter their approach and duties accordingly. You should expect that your worker will be going over a good amount of paperwork with you though- it's the most annoying part of the job. It's great if you don't need the extra help but it's there so why not? Hope this helps!
