Thinking about going to therapy again - February 22nd 2015, 01:56 AM

So I'm considering going back to therapy. Last year, in October, I completed a form of therapy known as TFCBT(Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy). Then, I was diagnosed with depression, PTSD, and general anxiety disorder, and I was self-harming as a way to cope with all of this. When I completed the therapy all my symptoms had decreased so significantly that my therapist said I'd be fine without a therapist. Not that long before I completed therapy I was weaned off my meds I was taking for depression and anxiety.

For the most part, I've been fine. I've only had a couple of rare PTSD attacks, and a couple of rare anxiety attacks, and only some bouts of depression. My self-harm urges are more common, but I haven't hurt myself since sometime around last September or October. I just feel like I could benefit from having a therapist again, where I can talk without any kind of judgement or guilt(because I often feel like when I'm having problems I become a burden) about what I'm thinking or feeling. Also, they can help me remember my coping skills even when I want to forget, and if I ever start to go downhill again I'll already have someone looking out for my mental health.

However, I really don't want to have to go through the whole process of finding a therapist that I trust and connect with. And while my mom said that she'll take me back to therapy if I want to, I know she really dislikes dealing with therapy and therapists. So, it's like I do want a therapist, at least I think I do even though I'm not 100% certain yet, but I don't want to deal with the painstaking process of finding one again and I don't want to frustrate my mom.

HAPPINESS is just waiting for me to take it; I truly believe that now.

I understand that your mom doesn't like therapists, but I am willing to bet that her interest in seeing her child be healthy and happy will outweigh whether or not she likes therapists. She wouldn't have offered to take you if she didn't care or think you were more important.

However, if that's really a strong deterrent for you, why don't you look into a way to go to therapy without your mom. For example, she can give you all the insurance information, wire you the money, and give you money for buses or taxis to go to and from, or you could walk or bike. Since you are 16, you can easily go without a parent.

If you think it would benefit you to go back to therapy, then maybe you should. I know it sucks when you don't know if you'll like a therapist or not. You can start with research online and go from there. It'll be worth it.
