running a peer based social group at my day treatment program - January 9th 2018, 01:29 AM

edit: Well I spoke to the director yesterday. I will hopefully be starting an arts and crafts group at my iop. It will be in the context of mental health peer support, stress relief and skill building. I am not a qualified therapist and this would not be art therapy. It is more of a social support activity. Any tips or ideas would be valued.

so far I have:

jewlery making

duct tape flower pens

duct tape wallets

doodling prompts, art prompts, story writing prompts

games such as turn a doodle into an artwork. It's hard to explain. But it's fun! This is mostly if the group is feeling uninspired or creative blocked, or just having a heavy day.

maybe cross stitching or a sewing kind of thing.

Maybe mosaics.

Maybe felting

maybe origami

maybe printing a design on clothes or something

a t-shirt bag or other upcycled project

--------------
It would be one activity a week, for 12 weeks, maybe less. It is for people with different levels of occupational, developmental, learning challenges and mental health challenges. I want it to be simple, fun but also room for creative expression. Even with something like felting, I might do a small planned out activity like how to make a felt key chain and have cookie cutter designs for those who need it and then for the more advanced ones, they can do their own design. Something like that with a lot of room for modification.
I mean, I now can pull up all the links I've saved over the years, in case I become an art teacher one day, in my email address but that will take forever xD

I guess I am just looking to gather resources. Maybe I will look in the article section on TH too.

I've not been part of an arts and crafts group so I'm probably not the best person to comment. That said, I do think you have a good range of activities for people of varying abilities and there is definitely room for modifications too.

I like the printing a design on clothes possibility...maybe if possible, you could make tie dye designs? I've never done them but they look fun.

Have faith, and hope things run smoothly!

Thsnk you Holly.
I thought tye dye designs would be pretty neat but that would require dye and other materials and buckets of water that are preferably done as an outdoors activity. I will look into this as I've thought of it too and it can be fun for everyone. Maybe there's a safer indoor option.

Hey there,

When I was in treatment we would do art activities sometimes. One of the things I liked was art prompts. This allowed me to express my emotions without having to worry about having a masterpiece. I know that they would usually do a fun theme and a more emotional/dark theme. We would be able to pick between the two in most instances.

Another thing I used to enjoy was Fuse Beads/perler beads. However, this would require a lot of different tools so I am uncertain that it would be something you'd be able to try.

To be honest, I think that most people will enjoy any art activity that you do as long as they aren't made to feel as though they have to make it perfect.

In regards to tie-dying clothes, you could do a more indoor activity by using fabric paint. I believe you can get some fabric paint for a relatively decent price but I am not 100% sure since it's been years since I did it. I know, back when I was 9 or 10, I used fabric paint to decorate a onesie for my niece. I enjoyed it quite a bit and it wasn't super messy and was strictly indoors.

Also, I am going to link you to two articles that might interest you. These are two things I have been wanting to try.

There is also an activity that deals with recycling crayons which might be worth looking into.

I hope this helped and wishing you the best!
