Just got diagnosed with OCD - February 22nd 2018, 02:23 AM

So just today I got diagnosed with OCD and it was a very scary time.

I kind of already knew in the back of my head that I had it, but I truly didn't want to admit it because it wasn't something I wanted to deal with. But I was talking with my therapist today about certain tendencies I have, and that's when she diagnosed me. She told me that we can try medication, but we should first tell my mom. I was very scared for this because she isn't one to believe in mental disorders, and either is my dad.

When we were in the room with her she was being very nice and supportive, but still in that moment didn't completely understand, which is to be expected. We also told her about one of my tendencies, which nobody knew about, and she didn't exactly seem to believe I do that.

When we got into the car, we started talking a little more in depth into it, and she started really telling me her views on it, and seemed quite skeptical. She even said at one point "maybe you are making too big of a deal out of this", which broke me. My mom and I are so increadibly close, and I was just really hoping she would understand this, or at least try to.

I still have a knot in my stomach because of all of this, and I know my dad will just be worse. I know they love me and will accept practically anything, but this is something they don't exactly believe is true, or is blown out of proportion. How do I make this process easier? Because I don't even know if it was worth it to tell her.

Hey,

It might be helpful to talk to your counselor about this and see if she can do a few family sessions or if she could suggest a family counselor who might be able to work with your family. It can be difficult for people who do not understand mental health to fully comprehend everything but family counseling can help with that at times. It seems like your mom wants to be supportive but because she doesn't understand it she is saying things that are invalidating and hurtful.

Another thing you should try is finding information about OCD and letting your parents read it. If you do this you should read through the articles you find to make sure that it explains things accurately etc. There are times when articles simplify issues etc and it can lead to more confusion. You might be able to ask your counselor for suggestions on books/articles you could suggest your parents read.

It's up to your parents to try and gain knowledge and my hope is that they will make the effort to do so. I do know that family counseling can be helpful.

Best regards.
