I've been feeling weird - May 7th 2018, 07:21 PM

Lately I've been feeling different. I'll be doing a normal activity and suddenly I'll start to feel emptier then I already do, and I'll feel sluggish, lightheaded, and I begin to question everything around me. Like I'll question if what I am even doing is real and I'll stop because I believe that nothing is real, then I'll go back to normal just as fast as before.

I don't know if this is has something to do with my depression or what, but it is really weird and it seems like every time it happens it seems longer and longer. When I first experienced it, it only lasted a few seconds, but yesterday seemed like it lasted about 5 minutes. I don't know how to handle it and it is kind of nerve wrecking because when I'm normal I know that my surroundings is real, but when I'm in this... state, I am suddenly confused and believe nothing is real.

It sounds like you're struggling with dissociation. Dissociation is when your surroundings are difficult and you can't leave, so your mind takes you elsewhere. After this happens, the mind tends to use it as a coping skill in every day life. I saw another one of your posts somewhere and you had mentioned your step dad. Did you ever get this same feeling when he was mistreating you and your siblings? Maybe the two are related.

Dissociating can give you the feeling that you're not real or that the things around you aren't real and it can be a scary feeling. Maybe you can try some grounding techniques the next time you feel this way and this may give you an idea of whether or not you are truly dissociating. Try something that stimulates one of your five senses: chew a piece of gum, smell perfume, listen to music, eat something sweet, look at something shiny, or take a hot/cold shower to see if you feel more grounded.

I am around if you need anything.

I did get the same feeling, only it wasn't as strong as it can be now during normal situations.

I'll have to try that. I'll stock up on gum and buy a little perfume bottle. Maybe it'll help me feel more grounded. Thanks.
