Very Low Self-Esteem - August 26th 2009, 04:52 AM

so i have like a very low self image and low self esteem
like honestly, i can pretend that im awesome sometimes, but honestly i dont believe it
there is not one thing about myself that i can say i like, and i often make demeaning remarks about myself without even knowing im doing it, im only conscious of it when my friends point it out and tell me to stop

i was just wondering if anyone knew of any mental disorder that sounds like this or if it isnt anything at all and i'm just weird :P

I think most people feel like they have low self esteem at some point- I'm no doctor but I don't think there is any mental condition that causes low self esteem and no other symptoms, but I have depression and when it gets bad, my lack of self esteem is one of the first things I notice, so if it is really a serious problem you should talk to someone-you might be surprised at how much talking to even a family member can help- i know for me it helps that my mom knows about my problems because I know that if I start feeling low, i can get the help I need and that provides some comfort.

If its not so bad that you think you might be depressed or something, try doing little things for yourself to boost your confidence:
~write yourself positive messsages and read them outloud to yourself when your feeling bad-even if you dont believe they are true, reading them outloud can sometimes help and if you do it enough times, you might start believing yourself
~get a cute new hairstyle to boost your confidence-people always complement new hairstyles
~go out and buy a new outfit that makes you feel beautiful
~get a pedicure-cute toenails are always good
~look in the mirror and tell yourself your beautiful EVERY DAY-you will start to beleive it
~always be positive and look for the good things in yourself while trying to improve on the not-so-good
~surround yourself with positive people who love you for who you are
~remember your not alone, so many people feel the same way

Hey Izzie,

I think we all feel bad about ourselves at times. You are not weird at all for having low self esteem. Do you know if anything has made you have low self esteem? There are ways to boost your self esteem. You could try writing a list of all your positive qualities. If you feel not able to think of many you could ask your family and friends what the good things they see about you. I bet there are many but you probably don't see them because you have low self esteem so often put yourself down and focus on the negatives about yourself. You could remind yourself of this list when you are feeling negatively about yourself. Also when you get a negative thought about yourself try to replace it with a positive one. You have to try to think more positively! I know that is so much easier said than done.

Something like taking up a new hobbie could help to increase your self esteem. Be kind to yourself and try to accept other peoples compliments. People will like you for who you are not what you look like and if they don't then they are not worth it.
