He needs to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital! - September 26th 2009, 10:05 PM

My uncle suffers from paranoid schizophenia, my nan has always looked after him and usually when he gets ill there comes a certain time when my nan will admit him to a psychiatric ward.
She's really been struggling with my uncle recently and he's been pretty ill for the last few weeks.
My nan has not came to family gatherings and not wanted to bring him due to how ill he is right now.
She's a 73 year old woman, she's too old to be doing this. I know it's her son and everything but she's an elderly lady and she can't cope anymore. She obviously hates having to put him in hospital but it really is for his own good.
My cousin called my nan's house the other day and my uncle answered the phone, she said he was speaking about Jesus and God and he mentioned he was hearing voices, he was accusing her of saying things she didn't and when she said she had not said it he blamed it on the voices in his head.

I hate him being like this but now is the time to get him some help. I guess the sooner the better really.
Any advice that could be given on this would be fantastic.

You need to be supportive, although I'm sure you already are.
Maybe help out your gran, make it easier on her.
It's going to be painful, but it's for the best.
If it get's really bad, talk to the doctors about it.

Hey there,

Sometimes it can be scary when somebody we know, love and care about has to be admitted to a psychiatric unit. What you need to understand is that your uncle is currently going through a very difficult time and a psychiatric unit such as the one that he will be attending in a short time will definitely help him.

I think there is something you can do however, like Matthew quite rightly said you will need to support your nan. She cares about him a lot so it seems and it will be difficult for her when he gets admitted. You and the family just need to be there for her, and support her through this difficult time.
