Psychotherapy. - November 16th 2009, 05:07 AM

Okay, so Im going to be having an assessment for psychotherapy soon, and I'm terrified, I dont know what to expect..
Im sure it'll be questioning me about stuff, but what kinda 'stuff' and how do they decide if it'll help you, I really feel I need this therapy, as does my mental health team.

Can anyone tell me about there experiences??

[x] Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You wont try for me, not now,
Though I'd die to know you love me,

I'm all alone,

Isn't something missing?
Isnt someone missing me [x]

Baby, i want you to be my superman.

I've only been counseled once, as a requirement for a class. I gained alot from it, though, and I think it will serve to make me a better counselor.

Anyway, at least in the initial session, I would expect your counselor to ask basic questions about your family, friends, relationships, etc.. Basically, learning a bit about you. They'll also likely ask why it is that you are seeking psychotherapy. Beyond that, what questions are ask depends on what "school" of psychology your counselor espouses. Someone who prefers client-centered therapy will ask different questions than, say, a psychoanalyst or an Adlerian psychologist.

I promise you that it's not as scary as it seems. They'll just ask you simple things mostly in the first meeting like what you want to get out of the therapy and ask about your friends and family. They'll also ask some questions about things going on with you. The questions they ask are really mostly dependent on your situation and how you answer other questions, so I can't tell you exactly what they'll ask, but I can tell you that you don't have to be afraid, even though it's understandable you're nervous. I was terrified my first time, but it wasn't bad at all and it was actually kind of nice. The only spot you can really run into trouble is if you don't like the therapist themselves, in which case you'll want to keep trying therapists until you find one you like. Good luck with things and PM/VM me if you have anymore questions.

I'll see you on the other side.

Steph I'm so glad you are finally getting assessed for psychotherapy.. things are at least moving along. try to remember that. I can't really offer advise because I'm completely unfamiliar with the UK health system.. but all I can say is just be as honest as you can even if it hurts or if you are embarrassed.

please PM me and let me know how everything goes
I'm sorry I haven't been on recently, I've been sick in bed for the last 4 days
