Scared of being left on my own - December 10th 2009, 11:08 AM

If I go out somewhere with friends/family I'm always scared I will somehow end up losing them and I will be left there on my own. I especially hate it when I'm with one male friend/family member and they have to go to the toilet. Obviously I can't go in with them so I'd have to wait outside for them, I hate it I somehow think they're going to leave me and not come back. I also hate it when I'm in the car with my dad and he gets petrol and has to pay in the shop, I hate being in the car on my own waiting for him to come back.

When I went out to a club with my friends last summer it was FULL of people and my friend left me at the bar on my own because she needed the toilet. I had a full blown panic attack because I thought I'd be stuck there on my own and have to find my own way home.

Until I was about 14 I hated my parents leaving me in the house on my own too, now I'm fine. So if I could get over that I should be able to get over this.

I wouldn't like to try and say either way, it does sound like things my sister goes through, to be sure it'd be great if you could answer a few questions, if you don't mind.
Have you been diagnosed with an Anxiety Disorder in the past?
How often do you have panic attacks?
Where do you usually have them?

Have you been diagnosed with an Anxiety Disorder in the past? Nope
How often do you have panic attacks? I used to have them more often (about once every two weeks) now it's about once a month/two months
Where do you usually have them? When I'm somewhere with loads of people I don't know, or sometimes for no reason at all.

Thanks for the reply <3

It's natural to feel like that sometimes, I think it's just heightened with yourself. I'm the same around people I don't know, I can get very anxious and I have to leave for a while to calm down. If you're concerned you may want to take a couple of self-tests online for an Anxiety Disorder, particularly for Social Anxiety Disorder, it's fairly simple to deal with. I took one myself and got quite a high score when I didn't expect to. Maybe that will give you a better explanation, as it's often formed through childhood, though it's not certain.
I hope this helps....

Take Care.

It wouldn't shock me if I had some form of social anxiety tbh. The strange thing is I'm only ever anxious with new people in certain situations/environments (like schools, colleges and pubs) Just say if I'm food shopping I could go up to a worker and ask where someone is very easily. I can also start convos with workers easily /: I always used to talk to this girl who worked in the Claire's accessories in town without any worries.

I used to get this too, it's made worse for me because I can't drive, so if it were to happen I don't know what I would do. As I got older it got better, but whenever I go somewhere with someone I always stay by them so I don't get lost or lose them. I get lost easily and I get the feeling that I won't find them again.

I can't drive either so all I could do is phone a taxi/my dad to pick me up if I ever did get lost.

I would definitely talk to a doctor if you are having panic attacks that much. I am sure that stress on your life can’t be making anything easier. Just because it is so frequent and it is making it hard for you to go out in social situations. So talking to a doctor is the best thing to do for now.
