If you were hospitalized involuntarily as a minor, but then turned 18, are all records concerning your history of mental illness sealed automatically, or do you have to do something to have it done? I'm wanting to know because I want to know if they would show up on background checks if I didn't do anything.

As far as I know, your mental records are completely hidden anyway. As in, it won't affect any job searches or college crap or anything. That's what I've been told anyway. I'm not sure though what exactly kind of background check you're talking about. I can't say the same for something like a court case or something. o.o I doubt though that it'd be a problem to be honest.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

I'm not sure where you live so the laws may vary but generally, your medical records are always sealed. The only way anyone has access to them is if you allow a doctor to view them and you sign a release form stating [person] has access to your medical records. The only exceptions may be for high secretive government access but even then I'm not sure.

For gun applications, it depends where you live as there have been tighter restrictions for those with mental illnesses. For example, in the USA, each state has its own policies so you'll need to look up the policies for where you live. You may be asked if you have a mental illness, the most recent year of treatment and possibly documentation from your psychiatrist. Some places may allow your psychiatrist to give further documentation that you've been "cured" or in their opinion, are mentally fit to handle and possess a gun. Other places are a bit different in that they ask have you been adjudicated (involuntarily/civil commitment) only and don't care if you have a mental illness but never involuntarily committed.

If you're in the USA, then this will help you: http://www.statemaster.com/graph/gov...ibited-persons as it shows each state's policies summarized in a few lines. If you're not in the US, then look them up online.

Why must you be smarter than me? I don't handle guns lol I will when the zombies strike. But then you won't need a background check. There are zombies.
