Question Bipolar disorder? - June 15th 2010, 07:43 PM

I always have extreme mood swings, and when I was little my grandmother thought I was bipolar. My aunt has bipolar disorder, so it could be genetic. How can I be sure?

Love you-- Kayla c:

Feel free to PM me if you need anything or have any questions :-)

There are many other symptoms to bipolar disorder than just mood swings.
Also, as a teenager, mood swings are a complete pain in the ass.
But if they're becoming a problem for you, then I'd consider speaking to a doctor about it to make sure

Hi Kayla,

Bipolar disorder is really hard to diagnose in teenagers, or so my doctor has told me. She thinks I might have BPD, but she can't say for sure; I take pills, though, for mood swings, and they help tremendously. So I think that you should go and talk to a psychiatrist and let them know what's been going on. They might not be able to diagnose you with bipolar disorder, but they may be able to help you out with medication regardless.

Hope this helps, and that you get the help you need soon!

Agreed. Plus, the mood swings are different than most people think. Seeing a professional would help, for sure. They'd be able to tell you if your mood swings are something to be concerned about, or just simply your hormones from being a teenager. Seriously, with the hormones fluxuating, and personalities developing, thats why mental health professionals try to avoid diagnosing teenagers with Bipolar, or even Personality Disorders, unless something is predominantly off.

So it's worth a try, for sure, to see what's up, and whether its something to worry about or not.

It's a possibility if your aunt has it. I wouldn't just talk to a doctor; I would get a psychological evaluation, which was how I was diagnosed with it.

Another symptom I have is an EXTREMELY terrible sleep pattern. I'll sleep anywhere from 0-15 hours a night, depending on my moods. If you experience this then I'd DEFINITELY get another opinion/tested.

when you love and laugh abundantly you live a beautiful life.
