Is it normal to have attachemnt to my therapist - June 16th 2010, 07:53 PM

sorry the title is meant to be,

Is it normal to have NO attachment to my therapist.

Hey everyone

I'm reading online that so many people get attached to their therapist. Thing is I'm not attached to mine. She helped me so much and helped me get out of self harm, depression and suicidal thinking. (We still have issues to go through). I am so incredibly grateful to her for helping me and showing me there is hope and teaching me to cope. I like her a lot, think she is cool and I see her a role model. But there is no attachment as it is a temporary relationship. To me it is nice sweet but above all professional

Am I normal? I feel ungrateful. Am i being cold? I feel like I'm being cold cos she practically saved my life.

PM me! I'm nice. Really! Don't believe what those faries say!!

No, I don't think you're abnormal or cold. If you are, then I am too. I like my therapist, and she is very helpful, but I have no real attachment to her at all. We keep a strictly professional relationship.

Quite normal. Mine irritated me more than anything else.

No, that's normal. When I had therapy I think I subconsciously didn't get attached to my therapist on purpose because it's easier to talk about depression to someone I know less, for me anyway. Don't feel weird about it!!

I've never done therapy, but I've had some pretty intense moments with one of my counsellors before and while she was super nice (and cute!) I don't feel unusually drawn to her, or like she's my surrogate mom or anything.

Though maybe that's because she was also pretty good about getting me to put feelings like that on the table. When I remember stuff like that, I start to think I owe her more than I even realize sometimes.
