Nope, got none of them. I don't consider violence, gore, blood, etc.. to be a fear to me, rather something that's exciting or funny.

I could say cases in which I have a few - if not many of these. It just depends on the circumstances. Also- many greatly overlap.

I guess my main one is claustrophobia, I hate elevators, I always have to be standing by the door, and first to get out. I hate planes, too close together. I hate being in huge crowds without someone I know. I used to freak out about lock-down drills because we'd all have to scrunch up so close together.

I could probably apply all of these things to myself at different degrees, but that's it - they would all be at different severities. I don't feel the need to label myself with phobias because although I am scared of some of these things, I have never really thought of them as phobias, just fears, and everyone has fears of lots of different things. I don't think that there is anything wrong with having fears of these things, the phobias you have pointed out are not uncommon. I would say that the things you are stating of phobias are actually quite common and they are not at all unusual. Most people you know will probably have a fear of some of these things. The things you are pointing out also often have negative connotations, so it is natural to fear them.

Re: My list of fears and Phobias... - February 16th 2009, 04:50 PM

I have several fears, but very few outright phobias that I've been diagnosed with. I don't want to try to belittle your fears and phobias at all, but that was quite an extensive list; are you really phobic of all of those? I just couldn't imagine being able to function with so many phobias.

A phobia is fear to the extent that it is unreasonable, uneeded, unhelpful and disabling. For example, I have a phobia of my own blood and sharp objects of any kind. Now a general fear of sharp objects is healthy; fears can keep us safe, and a fear of sharp objects will cause you to be more careful around things that can hurt you. If you're working in a kitchen, a slight fear of knives will ensure that you're careful, and you may not cut yourself. A phobia of sharp objects is different. My phobia of sharp things and my blood can sometimes be outright dangerous to me; I've denied medical treatment before because I was so afraid of getting needles. I've cut myself while chopping vegetables, while alone, and I passed out and bled quite a bit because I couldn't stand the site of my blood; if I'd cut myself worse, that would have been very bad.

Fears can be annoying and inconvenient, but they're a necessary part of life. They're not really considered phobias until they start forcing you to alter your lifestyle (I don't use anything sharper than a butterknife to cut my food, for example, and I've stopped going to the dentist because his assistant once poked my gums with a pointy tool)

I have fears of many of these things, but as Grizabella said, are you sure they're all phobias? That is a lot...maybe they're just fears?

Can I ask what its like being both agoraphobic and claustrophobic? I'm agoraphobic, and for about 3 weeks I wouldn't leave my home; what made me feel better was sitting in a confined space, like my closet. I'm confused as to how you can be afraid of both closed and open spaces?

To be honest. I've always had an opinion, that by labeling fears it makes them worse. I'm not saying that having a phobia isnt accurate. I'm highly phobic of snakes and needles, and have a fear of heights. But if i was too think about it...i dislike lifts, they make me panicky because there small...but to me its not exactly life-disabling, i just walk the stairs when necessary. It just seems that labelling yourself this many makes them worse. For instance, all guys fear losing an errection, it would be damn embarresing and 'unman' them. It doesnt effect your day-day life.

Have you ever thought of hypnosis to help you cope with these phobias? I mean they can't exactly be easy to live with.

Hm, I'm opposite, I could care less if someone else is bleeding. Won't use anything sharper than a butterknife though because I'm too afraid of my own blood.

My main ones would be a fear of being forgotten by those who I care about, if I'd die before my aunt that she wouldn't be able to come to my funeral (weird, I know, but it's partially why I don't cut anymore) and also fear of getting raped.
The last one only kicks in badly when I'm around certain people, and that made last semester terrible for me. It also made a whole weekend ruined because I kept panicking after something happened Friday, I was freaked the whole weekend.
However, stuff like blood and gore and needles, I'm fine. I actually love giving blood (real weird right?) and would really like it if they'd let me watch but they refuse to. -.-

All I can say is I would be very careful of self diagnosing yourself with a mental illness, even a phobia. It shouldn't be taken lightly, and you really should see a professional before deciding 'I have a phobia of x and y'.

Re: My list of fears and Phobias... - February 19th 2009, 02:13 AM

here are my fears so far:
I cannot stand closing my shower curtain when I shower.
I also do not like to close my eyes when I wash my hair or get water in my eyes or I will go into a panic attack. I hate bending over in my shower and looking at the angle of the water coming down. I hate to be close to LONG STREAMS OF WATER like LARGE fountains and hard pressured showers (like hotel showers).Don't worry I bathe regularly.
I hate OLD PICTURES.Not like family pictures but like OLD DEAD PRESIDENTS or SHAKESPHERE. I also hate HUGE pictures of anything. I hate statues.
I HATE when I'm in a room alone and there are objects too close to me.
or things like empty chairs or dolls around me.
I sleep with two teddy bears on either side of my bed.
When I don't have them I FEEL VERY UNSAFE!!!
I can't go to sleep in my house unless somebody is here.
I hate it when things drop on the floor.

Achluophobia- Fear of darkness
Arachnephobia or Arachnophobia- Fear of spiders
Entomophobia- Fear of insects.
Pocrescophobia- Fear of gaining weight.
Thanatophobia or Thantophobia- Fear of death or dying.
Being hurt Emotionally.
Gore.
Autophobia- Fear of being alone or of oneself.
Odynophobia or Odynephobia- Fear of pain. (Algophobia)
having sex but not of sexual acts (oddly).
Nyctohylophobia- Fear of dark wooded areas or of forests at night
Hurricanes/Tornadoes.
Noises in the night.

yep. I'm nearly scared of everything.
My mom doesn't take any of my fears (besides my Fear of darkness seriously)
I'm a freshman in highschool and I still have nightlight and two teddy bears hugging me at night.

These would apply to me

Claustrophobia - Fear of confined spaces, the bigger the space im in the better i feel

Dishabiliophobia - Fear of undressing in front of someone. (comes with low self esteem) (probably because of my gender dysphoria thing)

Didaskaleinophobia - Fear of going to school. (most people have that at some point) (school actually had a talk with me about this, because they had noticed)

Ophthalmophobia - Fear of being stared at. (again probably because of my gender dysphoria thing)

Pocrescophobia - Fear of gaining weight, haaaate this

Topophobia - Fear of certain places or situations, such as stage fright
(fear of my old house, where..... things happend)

Philophobia - Fear of falling in love or being in love (again probably because of my gender dysphoria thing)

Thalassophobia - Fear of the sea, 2 bad experiences in the sea and now i never ever ever go in the sea again.. to scared of it

Aeroacrophobia- Fear of open high places.
Agoraphobia- Fear of open spaces or of being in crowded, public places like markets. Fear of leaving a safe place. (very mild, and only when I'm on my own and having a bad day and feel insecure and unhappy anyway)
Having to always be good.
Screwing up.
Failing at things.
Failing.
Feeling empty inside.
Not feeling.
Philophobia: Fear of falling in love or being in love.
Being hurt Emotionally.
Being Rejected.
Social phobia (crippling)
Ophthalmophobia- Fear of being stared at. (There's a couple of hyper-confident very open people in my class who stare very openly at other people when they're talking, I mean, more than other people, and they scare the holy crap out of me. I actually squirm because of them. I mean, this isn't normal people staring at, these are actual uber-starers. It's horrific. I wish they'd wear sunglasses or something... or would that make them worse?)
Demophobia- Fear of crowds.
Entomophobia- Fear of insects.

Wow, I'm even more screwy than I thought I was =P
