Is there something wrong with him? :/ - July 27th 2010, 06:00 PM

I've always thought my mum's friend Dave (not his real name) was odd but lately I've been thinking about the way he is a little more :| My mum was joking around the other day and said he seems like he has schizophrenia but... I think he may :/ or at least has schizophrenic tendencies.

He thinks he's amazing at everything. If someone gives him criticism he just thinks they're being stupid. He believes he has this great idea and would like to start a business from it, thing is he won't tell anyone the idea in case they steal it :|

He also believes he's psychic. I know a lot of people believe this but he always fears that people are trying to steal his energy when they stand close to him.

He also believes he has a spirit guide which is a rabbit I asked my mum if he has ever actually said he has seen this rabbit and she said yes :/

He doesn't like being close to people and goes places on his own a lot.

Yesterday he phoned my mum and this conversation happened:

Dave: I seen my old uni friends last night
My mum: oooh, you went back to where they live did you?
Dave: No
My mum: Oh, where were they then?
Dave: I had a dream that I was talking to them. I think they may be able to get me a job

O____O So, he thinks his friends he seen in his dream will help him find a job :|

Is this... well, normal?

Er... I don't know, it's really hard to tell at this point. Some people have stronger spiritual beliefs than others. My mom believes in a spiritual process called "dream-walking" where your spirit leaves your body while you sleep and interacts with the physical world. While you may not believe in this, he might, so I would be careful not to offend him. My parents believe in a lot of the stuff that he believes in, and I know they're not mentally ill. However, the other behaviours you described are a bit strange. I can't tell you whether he's mentally ill or not. If he begins to say things that would suggest he's planning to hurt someone or himself, then you should be concerned. I honestly don't think there's anything you alone can do if it turns out he is mentally ill. I would talk to your mother about it and ask her what she thinks. She might know more about Dave and be able to clarify. Good luck, whatever you decide.

The spirit guide thing I would ignore for the time being because various people believe in different animals as their spirit guide. I know at least 2 people on this site believe that, although their spirit animals aren't of rabbits, they're of other animals. It sounds odd to some but then again, believing in an invisible man who gave people a list of 10 things not to do also can sound kind of odd too.

By "normal"... well, "normal" is a meaningless term in psychology because what "normal" are you asking? "Normal" for someone with schizophrenia or "normal" for someone without it?

From what you said, I don't think it's schizophrenia. If (note the very big if), anything, it'd be delusional disorder and probably of grandiose type (although could be of mixed type or persecutory types too). I don't know much of him but may also be brief psychotic disorder. For all these though, I'm ignoring the rabbit spirit guide because it's a cultural belief or a non-theistic belief he has. May be odd but shouldn't be considered unless it's a lot more serious than what you said but I doubt it.

As always, one of the most important things, see if he's taking any substances (legal or illegal) and/or has a physiological medical condition that can be responsible.

Given the conversation you said they had last night about the friends in his dream. It doesn't sound normal. There's a fine line between spiritual beliefs and issues though, but it sounds like an issue. He sounds very paranoid if nothing else.
