Question Boyfriends Mum and Bipolar - September 13th 2010, 08:37 AM

So I live with my boyfriend and his family. I've been aware that my boyfriends mum has a Bipolar disorder and is being medicated for it over 10 years now. She usually is fine but once every 4 years (according to her husband) she has a major "episode" as he calls it. My boyfriend said that when she has an episode she goes crazy for about a month. He also mentioned that her last episode she tried to kill herself. But the weird thing about it is that apparently when she comes out of the episode she can't even remember what happened.

The other day my boyfriends dad was talking to my boyfriend, his sister and I to say that "She has started to lose it" and that the "episode is starting" so to be easy on her.

I'm just sort of scared of the stress that will put on the family and myself (I have an anxiety disorder).

I've tried looking up this "episode" and can't really find a lot of information. Has anyone got a clue about what will happen? I know each person is different but dpes anyone even know about these episode things?

Thanks to anyone that can give me some information.

Re: Boyfriends Mum and Bipolar - September 14th 2010, 03:50 AM

Well, since the episode is most likely of the Manic or Mixed variety, she'll most likely be overly happy. Like, ridiculously hyper, for lack of a better way to put it. She may become reckless, impulsive, spend more money, want to party, etc. She may seem like a whole different person all together.

And if its a Mixed Episode, she'll have those happy episodes, along with some very angry/very depressed moments, flipping out for no reason, becoming suicidal, etc.

I don't know what to tell you as far as dealing with it goes, but I'm sure your boyfriend and the husband will have an idea of what to do.
