I have an "irrational phobia" - October 17th 2010, 09:54 PM

I'm deathly terrified of being buried alive..

I told this to someone and they said that's extremely irrational because it would never happen to me.

Well, we are all scared of something, and to be honest some fears do seem rather silly Its really hard to overcome them though, and I dont really have an advice to overcome that fear, which does actually have some sence behind it. But don't worry you will not be buried alive, and you just have to train yourself to think that.

I don't think there really is a such thing as an irrational phobia, no matter how far-fetched it seems. Fear is natural, and sometimes we can't explain or even understand the things we're afraid of. Though some of our fears are more realistic than others, they're still fears. Don't worry about it. As long as it isn't bothering you too much, it's completely normal. If it does bother you a lot, I'd suggest you confide in a counselor or someone you can trust. They might be able to help you better understand your fear, thus making it less overwhelming. One of the first steps to overcoming a phobia is figuring out why you're afraid of it in the first place. Whatever you do, good luck.

Fear of being buried alive as a phobia = Taphephobia

Everyone has "irrational" fears. We can't help the things that we are scared of. I have many irrational fears and unless they start interfering with your day-to-day life it's nothing to worry about! I'm scared of Gnomes, and elevators. Those are definitely irrational! haha.

As others have said, phobias of things that people may find "irrational" are actually much more common than we think. In fact, in this "Share Your Phobias" thread (which yes, is currently closed, but still might help you to just take a quick look through it), users discuss their own phobias. And let me just tell you, from glancing through the thread, everyone is scared of things that others might find "irrational." As long as you're able to cope with your phobia, though, and not let it negatively impact the way you live your life, I think you'll be just fine.

Take care!
