Need advice! - November 5th 2010, 08:35 PM

Okay, so, after several tries, I FINALLY got up the nerve to call a local mental health clinic and make an appointment! (Biggest accomplishment of the year, haha.) I'm supposed to go in Monday.

But now I have a problem regarding payments.

You see, I have no insurance and I'm unemployed. Could be a bit of a problem, right? Wrong. Because apparently the clinic will only charge me $3, as long as I can prove that I am unemployed... They suggested my parents write a letter saying that they support me since I have no income of my own, and that this letter would be enough proof for them not to charge me anything except the $3.

This is totally cool and all, except I really, STRONGLY did not want my parents involved in this. I didn't want them to know I was even going at all. Or that I was even thinking about going. Or that I felt like I needed to go.

They have no idea I'm having any problems... You'd be surprised how much you can hide from your parents. Like extreme mood swings. Depression. Cutting. Anxiety problems. Etc.

But I need this letter from them before Monday, or I have to pay $150... which I don't have.

So, how exactly do I go about telling my parents this?? "Hey mom, by the way, I have mental problems and I need to see a therapist in town, and you gotta write a letter saying I'm unemployed."

???

Ack! I don't know! I wish I could get around it somehow, but I can't. It seems like no matter how old I am, I still need my mommy and daddy's permission and/or involvement.

Does anyone have any advice on this? How should I start this conversation? Do I need to tell them any details? They're already stressed as it is, I don't want to worry them any more.

Help please!

Hey, can you contact your tax offices and get proof you're unempoyed? Or your Social Insurance Number (don't know if it goes by a different name in the US). Either one would probably be able to prove you're unemployed without involving your parents.

I really don't know how to go about doing that... Like, not the foggiest. If I knew how (and could get over the anxiety I know I would have in that situation), I would totally jump on that opportunity though.

Well, I don't know either since I'm not in the USA. Can you e-mail your state's government, or the federal government, at least? Its always worth a try. I would say call someone, if you can build up the nerve to do that.

crazy_redhead: Can't forge it. They said we would have to go to the post office and have them notarize it, saying that they witnessed my parents signing it.

-ArcAngel- : I did some researching online, and as far as I can tell, I would have to have filled out unemployment tax forms the previous year, which I didn't do. :/
