Question Mindfulness? - November 13th 2010, 02:56 AM

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knew what mindfulness is. My therapist said that next time I go to see her we are going to work on mindfulness to help with relaxation, how does mindfulness work and what is it?

Hey there,

I've never actually heard of this. From what I've discovered it seems to be a lot about alternative medicine, and meditation. This is about the best link I can find, and I'm not sure quite how accurate and helpful it will be, but here you are! Link.

I'm also going to move this thread over to Mental Health as I feel it's more suited there!
Take care.
Marie.

Mindfulness is from Buddhism and involves self-awareness of how you're feeling, your thoughts, accepting these and thinking of alternative views on something to have a multi-dimensional approach. In a way, it's like meditation to be calm and self-aware. But since your therapist is talking about it, there are mindfulness-based therapies, such as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression where you focus on certain things and no judgement is passed by you or the therapist to be aware of your feelings rather than reactive and not wanting to have them disclosed. It's used for other mental illnesses too and in all them, you as the client have to do the work outside of therapy.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Question Re: Mindfulness? - November 13th 2010, 12:42 PM

Thanks, you guys, you really helped. Now I have an idea as to what mindfulness is and what it's purpose is.

Re: Mindfulness? - November 13th 2010, 02:36 PM

My teacher mentioned Mindfulness to me and gave me this link;

http://www.getselfhelp.co.uk/mindfulness.htm

I can see why he mentioned it; I think it has the potential to be incredibly helpful. It has helped me a little bit by helping me avoid getting to wrapped up in my own thoughts, and also helped with my anxiety and calming me down.
I think I need some practise, though xD

Good luck!

Thanks Alex, I'll definitely look at that link.
