Can I help him? - December 6th 2010, 01:55 AM

One of my best friends has body dysmorphic disorder. He's actually really good-looking, but he sees himself as ugly.

I think he's getting treatment, but is there anything I can do about it? Is there anything I can say that will make him feel better about himself?

I don't think anything you say to him will help him to feel better, because it's in his own perception and he needs to get help for that. If you told him he was good-looking, he probably wouldn't believe that and could end up arguing with you. What I would do is keep being a good friend, and make sure he knows that he can talk with you. While he is going through treatment, you might want to avoid mentioning any vanity issues or commenting on appearance, unless you notice him doing so. Hopefully that makes sense - haha!
