Identity Crisis - January 10th 2011, 07:54 PM

OK, recently I've been feeling I'm not being treated as a 'real' human being. I have a twin brother who used to go to the same school as me but has recently gone to a different 6th Form college while I've stayed at the same place.
Anyway I've been noticing more and more that people just call me by my surname, they constantly ask how my brother is and I constantly feel like I'm being compared to him. Everyone just assumes that cos we're twins we must be identical (we're not!) and can't be bothered to tell the difference. I've even been confused for him at the school he left!
Please, has anyone else had any problems like this? What can I do to make myself feel like a 'real' person? I love my brother but I just wish we were different.

Hey Jack,

I can’t remember who they were, but many famous psychologists developed theories that the teenage years are times of identity, of self-discovery. So while your case might be a little extreme, rest assured that you are definitely not the only person with identity problems.

People call you by your last name? Ask them not to. If/when they confuse you for your brother, tell them kindly but firmly that you’re not the same person, and that you’d appreciate it if they didn’t mix you two up. Unfortunately, people are naturally pretty lazy. They’re probably just getting mixed up because of that laziness, but if you put in a little bit of effort on your part to try and get the message across, your situation should get at least a little bit better.

Good luck.

"Want to know a secret?

You are beautiful.

Black, white, gay, straight, bisexual. Whether you are smart or quiet or impossibly in love with your best friend, someone out there cherishes your smile and gets butterflies when you walk into a room.

Someone out there can't stop thinking about you. You Are Beautiful. Don't ever believe differently."
