Well hey there (:
It's important to know that while self-diagnosis may be popular or pretty regular occurrence... it's never certain, and consulting a mental health expert, whether at a doctor's office, a hospital, or a clinic... is always the way to go, if you want to get help for yourself or someone you know. Just to throw that out there.

Bipolar disorder and manic depression are actually the exact same thing... it's a condition with more than one name.

It's marked by a person's mental state alternating between depression, and being over-excited. The depressed state will usually include a sense of hopelessness, emptiness, sadness, etc. and whatever personal reaction an individual might have to feeling these things. The over-excited, manic state typically includes being particularly active, talkative, loud, impulsive, forthcoming and perhaps being less inhibited than normal... both socially and sexually, a lack of sleep and in some cases irritability.

Treatment is said to be very effective when patients keep up with their meds, which usually consist of lithium or norepinephrine (for manic state) and antidepressants (for depressed state).

If you want additional information, you can check here to find what the DSM-IV says. It's pretty much what doctors go by, when diagnosing mental disorders.

Thanks (:

And it wasn't a self diagnosis, I had just heard these terms thrown around before and I was wondering what they were

Hey!

A few other AWESOME and really informative websites to find information are The National Institute of Mental Health and then of course good ole Mayo Clinic.

Since this seems to be a fairly straightforward question and you've found out the information you needed as well as been directed to some very reliable sources with a plethora of factual data you may want to check out in the future, I'm going to go ahead and close this thread. Please don't hesitate to Private Message me if you (or anyone) would like to talk about that!
