Teenager mood swings or more? - June 29th 2011, 05:15 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

At what point do mood changes become more than just teenage hormones and start to classify as something more?

My moods are quite extreme. When I'm happy then I'm really happy. Nothing can bring me down. I feel invincible. On top of the world. I talk all the time and will laugh for no reason.
But when I'm sad. I'm completely depressed. I'll have no energy. I don't want to go out, I shut myself of from the world and hide away. I overdose, cut my arm and constantly think about suicide. I've even tried it a few times.

I guess what I'm asking is 'is this normal teenage mood swings or something more?'

Depends... How often do these mood swings happen? How long? Do they have any "triggers" to cause them? Do you have "normal" moods?

What would class as a 'normal' mood?
Sometimes they have triggers but most the time they don't.
When I'm happy it lasts for a few hours normally. But can last a day or two. But my depressed mood lasts for days on end. If not a week or two.
There mood swings are quite rapid (like in a few minutes I can go from on top of the world to depressed and suicidal) and vary How often they happen.

Well, you might have Depression, but it's highly unlikely you have Bipolar Disorder (yes, this is the first thing people think when they have mood swings).

Your mood descriptions, your happy moments don't sound like Mania, and your Depressive moments MAY have something to do with Depression, but I can't tell you for sure.

Have you considered talking to your doctor about this, and getting a referral to somebody who'd know better?

I'm fairly certain I don't have Bipolar aswell.
I have been diagnosed with depression so was just wondering if the mood swings were just that and teenage hormones.
I don't want to bring up the mood swings though as it would just be awkward

Well, the mood swings are probably nothing more than hormonal, as far as going from Happy to Sad easily. You get what I mean?
