I'd kind of like to see a therapist or psychologist but am not really sure if they'll be able to help. I'm scared they'll think I'm wasting their time! I was emotionally abused by my parents growing up and used to self harm. the worst of it occured when I was 15. I'm 19 now, so it's been a while. I'm not currently depressed, and I'm generally pretty happy, but it's like I have this past that I carry around with me and can't really let go of. I never really had the chance to vent or just tell someone everything. I told my sister and best friend bits and pieces of what was happening, but felt I had to censor it quite a lot. I feel like if I could just sit down with a professional and just tell them the whole story, that would be so liberating and really help me move on. I don't want to have to ask my GP for a referal though and tell him why (it would be uncomfortable, he's been our family doctor for years :S), if he's just going to say there's no point because it happened a few years ago and isn't exactly a crisis. Do you think I should do it??! would it even help?!? Thank you!
(also, I'm sorry if this isn't in the right spot - feel free to move it, I wasn't sure!) "He who does not weep, does not see" - Victor Hugo, Les Miserables.

You could ask for a referral and leave it there, and if he asks, why not simply say that you feel you have some things you'd like to sort out and you feel a therapist could do so effectively? There's no shame in seeing a therapist, and I think that you have every reason to see one! I know that there have been days I've gone to therapy happy, even, and without much to talk about. Therapy is there for you, it's a service for you, and there's no entry level requirement for how depressed you have to be or how many issues you have to have... Not to mention that emotional abuse can be extremely damaging. Seeing a therapist, I think, would be helpful, and I think it's at the very least something you can look into/try out; it's not like you're c ommitted to it for life if you go.
If you feel you'd like additional support or to speak further with me, you can contact me through my personal Tumblr, Love Like An Hourglass (click), or PM me through TH.

If you think you would benefit from therapy then it's worth a try. They won't feel like you're wasting their time, if they felt that way then they wouldn't be in that profession. They're there to help you, not to judge.
