will going back to the mental health unit help!? - August 9th 2011, 01:17 AM

okay might have seen my other post but regardless this is a question that i dont know, i thought i hit rock bottom when i was at the unit back in may this year but since i've been out things have got worse. i discharged myself from the ward cause i thought i was okay, turns out im not, i left the ward because someone needed me but cause i left i never truly got better. and now its coming back worse than ever, i think about killing myslef everyday, i had a run in with the police yesterday cause i was going to kill myself. i managed to persuade them i was okay. but the thing is everytime i get help i run from it because i'm scared of being branded as "crazy". i cant go back to the unit anyway someone i know would be broken if i did, so do i keep hurting until i kill myself or hurt someone in my life . i honestly can't take life anymore, it just keeps getting worse day by day. thank you to all who posted on my previous thread, means alot to me.

You said you left the mental health unit because someone needed you. Well, how much help can you be to that person if you're feeling suicidal? The best way to help that person is to help yourself first - and I think going back to the mental health unit is an option worth considering. If you're worried about the other person, encourage them to open up to their family members and friends, and direct them to resources you've used over the years (ex. TeenHelp, psychological professionals).

If the unit was helping you, I'd encourage you to return. Try to stay until you feel like you're ready to leave, ya know? Feeling suicidal is extremely emotional, overwhelming... hard to deal with without the proper help. If it keeps getting worse, why not try and stop it now

You can do this! Keep strong.

Can you call them? I thought you could just walk in? Hm. Call their non-emergency service line (or emergency line if you feel like you will kill yourself right now). I know it's hard to leave a friend when they need your help, but it's hard to help others when you need help yourself Maybe they can go to the unit as well? Or you can help them better once you feel better. Sometimes you gotta take care of you <3 "Secure your mask before helping others"

Call the police? Tell them you really think you are going to hurt yourself and need help?

Depression can cloud your judgment. It's easy to get stuck in a black-and-white mentality: "either I kill myself or I remain miserable for the rest of my life", "either I stay with my friend and they live or I leave and they kill themselves". You may not agree with me, but right now, you are stuck in that black-and-white, all-or-nothing mentality. Those are NOT your only options. You CAN get help for yourself AND for your friend (or whoever this other person is).

First, get in touch with this person you're supporting, as well as their family members and friends. Explain that you want to be there for that person, but you have to help yourself first. Encourage the person to join you in the mental health unit, or to talk to their loved ones, or to see a psychological professional, or all of the above! Of course, this person may feel like they're being "abandoned" (because they are also suffering from the black-and-white, all-or-nothing mentality that you are), so it's important to talk to that person AND talk to their family members and friends immediately after you've had the conversation with that person. Let them know that the person may be contemplating suicide, and that they need to keep a close eye on that person.

Secondly, call the police. It doesn't matter if it's 4 AM or 4 PM, there is always someone standing by. Tell them about the phone call you made the other day, and about how you told the police you were okay afterward. Let them know that you're NOT okay and that you want to go to the mental health unit. It might not hurt to ask a family member or friend to join you while you make that phone call, so they can offer support if you become scared and don't want to go with the police.

I really, REALLY want to emphasize once again how frequently people suffering from depression adopt a black-and-white mentality. They only see two options, and that can prevent them from getting help. Please read over everything that's been said in this thread, and ask yourself if "kill myself or be miserable forever" or "help friend and kill myself or help myself and let friend die" are truly your only options. They aren't.
