I hate my body. - October 11th 2011, 12:41 AM

i literally look in the mirror and want to shatter the mirror into tiny bits and pieces. I feel fat and I hate my body so much. I don't feel comfortable unless I'm wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. What I hate most is that I don't feel like this all the time. Sometimes I'll look in the mirror and feel so happy about myself that day, but other days, I hate everything I see.

I just can't seem to find happiness with my body or my mind.
Mind, meaning that I feel like I'm not good enough and I'm just a loser/disappointment to everyone.

Aliie, I think it reasonable to say that many (if not most) teens are self conscious about some part of themselves. I think it's about all the changes, it takes time to get used to them. How do I know this? When you were a kid and everything was pretty consistent, you were pretty Ok with yourself, right? Well, the only thing that's changed is the look (and feel) of things. Try to remember you're the same person you always were, with just a few new changes. Ok, Ok, a lot of new changes.

Fix? We all get thru the day with a bit of denial, so you might want to push away those negative thoughts, maybe remind yourself you're still Allie. And, try to do the things that you feel really confident about and good with, there's something very useful (especially now) about the self confidence and self assurance that those things are still a part of you, in spite of the things that are new and take time to get used to.

Hey Allie,
Why does it upset you that sometimes you feel good about your body also? Like Dr. Bobby said, most teens are self conscious about their body. That's OK. You're doing the right thing by reaching out and asking about it. There are different ways you can feel better about yourself whether it's acknowledging the positive features you have or simply sticking to the common phrase "it's on the inside that matters" do your best to keep this from controlling you. I know, I know, easier said then done but at this point it's a lot easier to stay about ground then dig yourself out of a hole. What I mean about that is physically doing something harmful to your body to make you feel better about yourself. Yes, eating disorders. I'm not trying to give you any ideas or scare you, I just want you to know you are in a good place right now. Although you may not feel that way, try to stay there. Be happy when you feel good about your body. Try to think about something else to occupy your mind when you're not feeling great about it. It's okay to feel that way. You just need to make sure you control your actions about it.
Take care,
Alessa

Is there a specific part of your body that makes you self-conscious? Face, weight, legs, etc.? I had body image issues for the longest time, and am still dealing with them at 22. No one outside my family told me I was attractive until age 18, at which time I had my first kiss. I still haven't had sex or a long-term relationship, but at least I feel better about the way I look. My biggest issues were my weight, large chest, skinny legs, and the size of my mouth (bj lips lol ). Fix what you can through diet, exercise, makeup, etc. and try to forget the rest.

I know exactly how you feel. Some days I look in the mirror and just want to cry. The way I deal with it is to focus the parts of me I sort of like. For me its my eyes lol, but just try and find something you like about yourself.

If you feel fat, why not do some exercise? Exercise releases feel-good hormones so you're sure to feel a bit better about yourself afterwards.

Here's something you might want to try: write down a list of things you feel are good about yourself, not necessarily physical. Whenever you feel bad about yourself, look at the list and try and remember all the good things. Easier said than done I know, but it has helped me in the past.

sooner or later though, you always have to w a k e u p
