Question intermittent explosive disorder - October 21st 2011, 12:41 PM

if theres anyone with intermittent explosive disorder out there would you be able to answer a couple of questions please.
my new boyfriend has it and i cant find any info on some things he's told me.

1. it can be triggered by heart rate so when having sex he can turn the outburst into passion.

2.when he's angry he only sees black so he says he swings wildly, but if a girl steps infront of him he can see a white outline

can anyone verify these facts?

Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to explore IED in my classes yet. What I want to ask you, though, is why you feel the need to verify what your boyfriend has told you. Has he said or done anything to suggest that he's not trustworthy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermi...osive_disorder

Wikipedia isn't always 100%, but their articles at least give a broad idea about the disorder itself, causes, diagnosing, treatment, etc. so hopefully it helps a bit.

IED produces mostly extreme bouts of anger (I know I'm simplifying) but not passion. There are various physiological models explaining IED and one of them includes a huge adrenaline rush, so when you two are having sex, it could be this huge adrenaline rush mixed with love.

I cannot verify the second statement, although the extreme bouts of anger would include physical violence to the point of needing to be restrained. "Seeing" black, white, red or whatever other colour is usually a metaphor. A more likely reason is he has a memory lapse (i.e. sees black because he cant remember what happened), which does happen for many people with "anger management issues". I'd like to say "seeing white" is because he recognizes someone important but due to temporary cognitive impairment but that's far to speculative for me to support.

Jasmine, always beware of anyone under any circumstance who uses (fabricates?) symptoms or disorders or self diagnoses as a justification for bad behavior! The difference btw'n self disclosure and downright justification is an ability to exert some judgment and self control.

Regardless of what this guy has, he sounds like trouble, so your response here is to protect yourself from him (and his likes) and maybe learn the lesson that when people demonstrate a superior ability to excuse themselves rather than a well thought out skill at self control you leave, sooner!

And if you ever find that 'toxin' let me know, we can save a lot from heart ache and make a lot of money in the process!

PM me with the link of the post you'd like me to respond to.

Re: intermittent explosive disorder - October 26th 2011, 07:18 AM

I'll be honest, I've cheated on my girlfriends many times and dumped many of them fairly quickly (although I do have one main stable one and 1 fuck-buddy my girlfriend is well aware of). I don't care for faking a mental illness in a very poor way because it shows he didn't take time to even read about what IED is but it also makes me laugh as it sounds so comical. However, I find it disgusting that he would fake a mental illness to sleep with someone who is not of legal age. I can handle promiscuity, it's fine by me but only with people who are of legal age and consenting, otherwise it's vile.

It hurt you but you cant go back in time and change it. Instead, learn from it. I don't know if you've contacted him but if you haven't, you can either simply dump him or get some revenge then dump him.
