My Parents? -
November 25th 2011, 05:18 AM
Hi.
So I'm, well I'm insane. I know something deeper than just being a teenager is going on. My parents have gotten somewhat difficult to talk to. How can I ask them to take my to a doctor that specializes in mental issuses? (Sorry I can't spell the word I'm looking for) I feel the easiest way would be tell them I (used to) hurt myself, but I've come so far, telling them might bring me back into the habit. Also they have voiced opinions saying self-harm is suicide. I have been suicidal many (many ) times, but I didn't hurt myself in an attempt to die. Please, any advice would be very helpful. My parents already think I'm some crazy goth girl, I don't want to add to their (somewhat false) ideas of me.Thank you so much for reading this, Lyric (Sorry if this needs a triggering prefix, i wasn't sure) Smile

Well, you'd have to talk to your family doctor about that, actually. Let's put it this way, you need a referral from your doctor before you see a mental health professional.
So, go to your doctor, and voice all your concerns. They'd be the first one to decide whether something is wrong or not. Remember, you'll have to be 100% honest. Best way to get to see a doctor is to get a physical. You can ask for your parents to not be in the room, so you can talk to the doctor privately if you wish. However, your parents will probably need to know anyways, due to your age. If your doctor decides there is cause to think that something further is going on than just teenager hormones stuff, they will usually then refer you to a mental health facility that accommodates for you (i.e. the free ones vs. the ones you have to pay for, or aimed for kids and teenagers, or whatever else), where they will contact your family about things like a waiting list, the appointment, etc. With your age, seeing a mental health professional WILL have to involve your parents, just so you know. There is no way you can get around it, whatsoever. It's the law. So just, try to keep a good line of communication with them, you'll need them there for you. |

Hey Lyric,
If you're serious about talking to a psychologist, you'll need to get a referral from a family doctor. I know it can be scary to talk to someone about what you're feeling, but it'll help you in the long run. If you can, talk to your parents about it. I doubt it will send you spiraling backwards. In fact, it might lift a huge weight off your chest. Once they know, they'll be able to go to the doctor with you and help you find a good psychologist. At the end of the day, they're your parents. They love you and want to be with you every step of the way. Good luck with everything. PM/VM me if you ever need it. Take care, Sammi. |

Samantha, my parents are kind of judgemental. I'm worried what they would say/think. And I've talked to my mother about feeling depressed and she pinned the blame and reason for it on a mean girl I know.
