Advice with living with OCD? - December 10th 2011, 08:58 PM

Hi guys,
I have OCD, which, for complicated reasons, causes me to try to move as little as possible when I'm around other people. I hate having to hand stuff to/grab stuff from people, too, because it requires getting close to them.
I take medication and see a therapist, but I was wondering if any of you just had any random tidbits of advice on living with OCD? Anything you think might help, really.
Thanks

Hey girl,
I've never personally struggled with OCD, but I lived at a treatment center for a few months with a lot of girls who did. Working with a therapist and taking the right meds is great. Also, from what many of my rehab sisters have told me, mindfulness and meditation can be really helpful. If you're not familiar with mindfulness, I'd highly reccomend the book wherever you go there you are by Jon kabat zinn. Bet of luck with everything Sarah <3

Hi Sarah.

It's great to hear that you're seeing a therapist and hope that one day you can be free from OCD.

I lived with OCD for many years and my best advice is to always remember that you are not crazy; it's the OCD which is making you act the way you are. I often felt as though the OCD was me because it had taken over my life, but looking back; it wasn't.

Also, bear in mind that recovery is possible, but it takes time and perseverance. Try to take one day at a time and eventually you will get there.

Feel free to message me at any time.

J. x

I have OCD and I found its easiest to ask them to respect you.. but if you ask the wrong people you may get bullied, so be careful. If you need someone to rant to im here

Hey there
I also have OCD and I've found seeing a therapist and taking the medication really helpful. The thing to remember is that you can and you will get better. Stay positive and remember that there are people in your life who love you and will support you. Remind yourself that it's not your fault that you're experiencing this. Even though OCD feels like you have no control, tell yourself that you have the power to be strong and not let the OCD rule your life. That kind of positive self talk really helps me I hope this was helpful, I wish you all the best.
