i think i am schizophrenic but i don't know how to tell a doctor - January 2nd 2012, 03:21 PM

recently been diagnosed with depression, took antidepressants, but the voices got louder and stuff. heard stuff about killing myself and others, was quite scary, so stopped the antidepressants. i am still hearing stuff. i am paranoid sometimes. i display a lot of the negative symptoms

i want to go to a doctor and tell them that i hear voices. i am worried they will think i am lying and strange. a lot of what i imagine is strange and i can tell this is strange. but the fact it every single day i have these things happen to me and it is taking over my life. i am also hearing my name on the tv, and other stuff. how can i go about telling the doctor this stuff?

Never diagnose yourself with schizophrenia. There are at least 5-10+ other, much more likely illnesses with psychosis symptoms, some aren't even mental health related. If you really want to be diagnosed, you just have to tell the doctor and get over the nerves, simple as that. It's like ripping off a band-aid.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

Like Marissa said, there are a lot of other illnesses that cause psychosis and there's a lot more to diagnosis than just matching symptoms.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist and not a general physician? A psychiatrist would usually have a better idea of the possible illnesses and what tests to run to rule out physical disorders first.
