hearing voices.. - January 29th 2012, 10:10 PM

For the last 3 months approximately I've been hearing voices on a daily basis. The voice never has anything nice to say, normally how inadequate I am,why am I here, telling me to cut and scratch and die.I constantly feel suicidal but my best friend took her own life and I could never make someone feel the way I feel because of her death.

I suffer with anorexia & bulimia and since the voice came its gotten worse.

I see a therapist but I'm terrified to tell her about the voices.I don't want her to tell my parents.I know its the best thing but my family have so much going on i dont want them worrying about me...

The voices could be a symptom of a mental disorder (ex. schizophrenia), or they could a symptom of something else (ex. a neurological disorder or chemical imbalance). Either way, it would be best to tell your therapist, so that you can rule out medical conditions (ex. neurological/chemical) and focus on the mental aspect, if there is one (ex. schizophrenia).

I understand that it's scary to tell your therapist about this, and I understand that you don't want to stress your parents out; however, telling both your therapist and your parents will allow you to get the help you need. Your therapist can modify her plan if you tell her about everything that is happening, and your family members can ensure you get the help you need. What would REALLY be stressful is to keep all of this to yourself, and risk having something worse happen (ex. the mental or physical illness going untreated).

Trust me it is best tO tell your therapist even if u don't want to. After all a good therapist will have experience from stuff like this, they will rule out everything. And the best reason tO tell is because the longer u Waite, usually the harder it is to treat and recover. Your lucky since its only been a few months.

I feel like the other users' posts are kind of scary So I'm going to start off with a little disclaimer - I am no medical expert, just experienced in this stuff.

But, I see a LOT of people here becoming very frightened because they're hearing a voice, and suddenly believe they have Schizophrenia. However, Schizophrenia in itself is a VERY rare, and VERY complex mental illness. In fact, it's more of an umbrella term for various forms of schizophrenia (some more common than others), one of which I have myself. I personally dislike it greatly when the first thought is Schizophrenia, although I can see why. Truth is, many things cause voices, including simple stress, depression, bipolar disorder, ext. It sounds like you are dealing with a LOT of stress, and possibly some depression or some other similar mental illness. I know you never mentioned Schizophrenia, but I bet the term has floated in your consciousness somewhere, and I'm just trying to reassure you that there is a huge chance it's not that bad.

Again, I say this only because Schizophrenia is the absolute first thing people think of, and I know how scary it is to see that term.

ANYWAY... As the others have said, talk to your therapist. You're 17, I don't know how things work in Ireland, but she doesn't HAVE to tell your parents, that part should be up to you. Do I think you should tell your family as well? Sure, because they're there to help you, and you should absolutely NOT have to go through this alone. Never make yourself go through this alone, you don't deserve to. I know how scary it is, but I can assume you've done it before, told them something you didn't want to. I know you have the strength to do it!

Truth is, your parents are always going to worry about you, voices or no voices. It's their job.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.
