Exclamation having difficulty talking to my councellor.. - April 12th 2012, 03:49 AM

So, a bit of background, i have seen a ton of different docotors and councellors and therapists, since I was about 6 years old. My mother always knew I had anger and anxiety issues snce i was a todler. None of these professionals had ever really helped untill the most recent one, Vanesa. She is very nice and although I had a tough time warming up to her in the begining, i got over that and we worked through alot of isues with my family. But about 2 mths ago something changed. I had been fine to talk about the isues i had with other people, but thn she wanted me to talk about isues with myself, like the fact that i dont se any positive qualities in my self. So, for the past 8 sessions, I have gone in and sat virtually silent for the whole hour. I walk in andit is as if i forget how to talk. So, if anyone has gonethrough something similar and has some advice it would be greatly apreciated.

Also, do your friends know you go to see a councello, because mine dont and im to sccared to tell them...

I've always been totally open with my friends about the fact that I go to counseling. You don't need to go around telling everybody, but maybe try with a close friend first. You also don't need to disclose what you're seeing a counselor for.

As far as talking to you counselor... do you feel like there are things between sessions that you really want to say or talk about? I find it helps for me to write things down as they come up, so if I get to my appointment and I don't feel like talking I can at least turn back to my notes.

I went a month without sharing anything. She reminded me I am only going to get what I put in. If I don't tell she can't help as much. I found that when she was on a sore subject I would bring up something else. I would go with something prepared. I go every Tuesday on Monday nights I sit in bed thinking of things I could bring up. It helped me stay away from talking about an abusive home, the time I was raped, or even how I accidentally almost killed my sister.(really was an accident I'm not that crazy!) so my advice is look for topics you are comfortable with and relate them to what she focused on.

My friends know and had questions but you don't have to tell them any descriptive answer just say you need to talk to someone sometimes. My parents ask all the time why I go or what I talk about I usually answer my daily stresses and my thoughts to help clear my messy head.
