eating in front of people - July 18th 2016, 07:30 PM

I've always disliked eating in front of people. I can remember instances from as far back as 4 years old where I would be given food and just sit there, not eating it because of some weird anxiety about the situation. I never ate lunch at school until I was about 10, and even then I would just eat one thing because my mom found out I was throwing all my food away. In the midst of all of my anxiety-related problems, this is one I tend not to think about at all. But its obviously important because dinner parties, weddings, dates (HAHAHAHAHA ok) usually require eating in front of people. Even now, I tend to isolate myself at work during break time and I tend to isolate myself in the basement instead of eat with my roommates. Is there anything I could or should do about this?

Well do you want to break out of this if so try getting a small meal and telling a close friend to help you like slowly break out of it like eat some food and watch tv that way they won't look at you all the time but they might a bit

Do you know where this fear stems from?

I can eat in front of family and close friends. Just not anyone outside of what I would consider close.
Nope. I suppose it could possibly be getting messy while eating, like I remember that when I was four and I couldn't eat, it was at a friend's house eating spaghetti. I also have a weird thing about most fruit, like I have a major phobia of all non-citrus fruits except watermelon. I don't know, maybe I'm just weird.
Apples are pure evil...

So it's a self-consciousness of the perception people will have of you, perhaps? Stemming from childhood messy eating habits? I'm asking just because it may help cater to the advice I give. It doesn't seem like it's an eating disorder in the regard of it stemming from body image, fear of being perceived as fat, or fear of weight gain, but I wanted to make sure.

This can definitely be a fear you bring up with therapy or a health coach, but I'd aim to do some minimum exposure therapy with it. Start with things you fear less (eating in front of a close friend) and then slowly move to less close friends, in public with strangers, in public around people you may be attracted to, etc. Make smaller goals for yourself and work up. Basically, create a scale of what you'd be most and least comfortable with, and try to move up it slowly! Remember that it's okay to be a little uncomfortable at first. Over time, you'll realize that nobody really pays attention when you eat and there's little to fear, and that there won't be any consequences.
