Arrow why is eating so tedious? - October 30th 2016, 03:32 PM

So I started university recently, and for the past few years everyone's been telling me im gonna gain weight when i start post secondary. The thing is, I've actually lost weight. I've struggled with anorexia, and still do to a degree, but most of the time its not my eating disorder keeping me from eating, its just I've come to think of eating as an incredibly tedious task. Sometimes its a struggle to even drink water, and I find myself putting off eating for hours on end, usually not eating at all until 5 pm. The food in my house is all stuff I like, but when I look at it I just don't have any interest or appetite. I'm afraid I'm slipping into old habits, but I don't know what to do. Food and eating has just become this tedious thing I don't want to do. I can hardly concentrate on my assignments, and I have little energy, but even that doesn't seem like enough to give me an appetite.

Eating doesn't have to be a chore. And you don't have to eat on a regular schedule like everyone else. People are all different, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work best for another.

As long as you have energy to get through the day, and feel positive about your self-image, I wouldn't worry to much about how much you are eating.

In college, we're so busy, so eating can often feel like something getting in the way of our career, academic, and social goals. However, due to your past struggles with anorexia, I would be extra careful not to allow this feeling to overwhelm you. I'd start making eating as easy for yourself as possible. Keep things in the house that are quick and easy, such as fruit, protein bars, bagels, etc, so that you don't have an excuse to not eat such as not wanting to cook. I'd also try to find foods you like and try new things to make food enjoyable. For example, I try to go out to eat at least once a week as I can afford, or treat myself to my favorites (particularly fancy coffee beverages) because they make me happy. Eating can be difficult to schedule in, but having on the go snacks and sticking to a meal schedule can be ways to make it a bit easier in college life.
